Red Cross workers on strike

American Red Cross blood service workers in Connecticut are on strike and walking a picket line.

The union that represents the workers says they've been working more than two years without a contract. Talks broke down Wednesday night, not over pay, but health care, scheduling, and a dispute over how many licensed nurses are needed at blood drives.

About 200 workers, who are members of AFSCME Council 4, hit the picket lines this morning in Norwalk and Farmington.

"It's a matter of many things," union spokesman Larry Dorman said. "This is a company the engages in unlawful practices. They've been found guilty of violating our members rights on numerous counts under the National Labor Relations Act, yet we've continually returned to the table trying to reach a mutually-accepted agreement.

"These are the workers who make the Red Cross happen. They are responsible for the safety and well being of blood donors," Dorman said. "The Red Cross refuses to reach a just and fair agreement."

The workers on strike are blood workers and not disaster workers so this strike won't have an impact on storm relief, but the Red Cross said the timing is wrong.

One more reason to refuse donations to the Red Cross.

My thoughts exactly.

Is the Salvation Army non-union? Anybody know?

This strike is the future of health care with Obamacare. Even without Obamacare, I see a future of health care strikes because demands for price controls will force politicians to enact them. Health care shortages are coming.

Good place for the OWS’ers or Dems to go to work. They seem to think you can get blood out of a turnip.

They’ve been working for the past two years..., and they are whining about not having a contract. Try not working, no contract needed.

Hope someone has the answer to that one.

I don't believe they are, and just simply a Christian org. Not sure if the officers get paid, but assume they must get a pittance.

I will ONLY give to the Salvation Army.

The union that represents the workers says they've been working more than two years without a contract.
What that means is a NEW (and greedier) contract.
They've probably been working the last two years under the terms of the expired contract.

I don’t know if they are or not but where I live they are getting money from people on probation by being a probation office, I don’t know how that works but they make a heap of bucks from it. I won’t give them a dime, half the bucket people are getting their community service hours in standing there.

I’ll never forget my Mom telling about when the troops were coming back from WW II the the red cross was selling them cigarettes they got for free to the troops. They don’t get money from either!!!

Just a fyi about the Red Cross.
In 1964, after the Alaskan earthquake (9.2) the Red Cross was selling donuts and renting blankets that the military gave to them.

I sent a message through the Red Cross to my wife in KY that I was alive and not to worry. Here it is 2011 and she still hasn’t received the message.

I do NOT donate to the Red Cross in any way, shape, or form.
