Your Facebook Comments, Coming Soon to a Google Search Near You
By Scott Gilbertson
Nov 3, 2011

Mind what you say in Facebook comments, Google will soon be indexing them and serving them up as part of the company’s standard search results. Google’s all-seeing search robots still can’t find comments on private pages within Facebook, but now any time you use a Facebook comment form on a other sites, or a public page within Facebook, those comments will be indexed by Google.

The new indexing plan isn’t just about Facebook comments, but applies to nearly any content that’s previously been accessible only through an HTTP POST request. Google’s goal is to include anything “hiding” behind a form — comment systems like Disqus or Facebook and other JavaScript-based sites and forms.

Typically when Google announces it’s going to expand its search index in some way everyone is happy — sites get more searchable content into Google and users can find more of what they’re looking for — but that’s not the case with the latest changes to Google’s indexing policy.

Developers are upset because Google is no longer the passive crawler it once was and users will likely become upset once they realize that comments about drunken parties, embarrassing moments or what they thought were private details are going to start showing up next to their names in Google’s search results.

That doesn't sound too good.

I had a Facebook page for 2 years. I just deleted it about two weeks ago. It’s beginning to creep me out.

Our FR comments are already part of a Google search.

45% Employers use Facebook-Twitter to screen job candidates

And this article is two years old, so I imagine the percentage has increased.

I HATE FACEBOOK!

I some friends that I went to a Marine Corps Ball with and one of them took pics. My pics ended up on his Facebook page. Nothing damaging, but it felt like a real invasion of privacy, when another friend ( who was not at the party) told me about how they saw the pics.
I never asked for my pics at a party to be on the internet.

I then vowed never to be on Facebook...I don’t trust that monster, never have.

“Our FR comments are already part of a Google search”

But they use our FR screen name, right? Wouldn’t Facebook have the person’s real name? (I have never been on Facebook and have no idea how it all works exactly.)

You can use a screen name on FB now. They started that a few years ago.

Frankly, it doesn't matter as it is all getting connected together anyways. That is why I use my real name and try to be careful what I post.

I do not post pictures of my children anywhere (except in their Halloween costume) for safety. I try not to post inflammatory language or outrageous things.

I do not always succeed, but I will stand behind who I am and never fear my opinion or conservative credentials.

Me too. I retreated from posting anything on my wall after a month due to concerns over access by future employers etc... and have since deleted the page.

I have to admit, it did bring me back together with old friends, but not worth the digital trail and those who may seek to use it against me for whatever reason.

Thank you, Erik! As long as FR’s screen names and real names aren’t linked! Looking back at the teasing I have done to poor Laz, Cripplecreek, Red Devil and JoeSixPack.... I’d have to leave town and enter some sort of witness protection type thing....

Easy way to get around this with employers: Have neither.

I was actually questioned in an interview why I didn’t have a Facebook or Twitter account. I told them quite frankly that I had no stomach for social media and believed it had no redeeming professional value.

I haven’t been hired yet.

I faked my name on facebook and blocked everything I could except for my friend list.

All of my friends are family and close friends of the family, less than 40 people.

Unless you know my fake name, you won’t find me or what I post. And, no, I’m not “Ron Mexico”; nor do I have his ‘problems’.

Sounds to me like you have used Facebook very wisely, Gun142! I have heard some friends say, “I have a thousand friends”.. referring to Facebook. Really? A thousand friends? I would think to myself, “Call those thousand friends and ask to borrow ten dollars. Do you really have a thousand friends?!!” LOL!

EL, your policy sounds like my own FB policy. I have always assumed a complete lack of privacy anywhere on the web, with a qualified exception for some emails, just as one would not assume privacy on a public street. I have posted accordingly. However, as I’m sure that in some truly totalitarian future, even my efforts at innocent posting will not protect me, I have therefore posted my true thoughts anyway, in defiance of any who might abuse my public exercise of freedom. FB is a wonderful tool for marketing, whether products, ideas, or candidates for political office. We should not allow our freedom of speech to be chilled by Google’s overreach.

I am a sales manager who has to work with many, many customers. I do not fear my political opinion will interfere with my work.

If a liberal refuses to buy from me because I am conservative, it is their loss. I do not sell unless both parties stand to gain from the transaction.
