Winning the World Series just wasn't enough.

The retired manager of the St. Louis Cardinals told a local radio station that his team never got the traditional phone call from the White House after their 6-2 Series win over the Texas Rangers last week.

Tony La Russa told CBS affiliate KMOX that amid the celebration last week, "We never did get a call."

I was wrong, totally wrong. And President Obama should not have played favorites. If he’s going to call one, he needed to call the winning team next year. Still, whether it’s Geore W. Bush, Clinton or Obama, it’s a waste of time and very uncomfortable to listen to. We need a Constitutional amendment prohibiting these calls to winning teams.

Not his voter base.

St. Louis is very much his "voter base".

Missouri, not so much. McCain pulled off a squeaker in the last election, state wide.

Even though it’s hockey and not basketball,I can’t help but think of that line from ‘Slapshot’:

Weird you’d think Obama would have ran to the phone being that george Bush used to run the rangers, then again, well he was probably so po’ed a cracker won( there I said it) I mean he’s been angry since he had to do the bear summit and couldn’t think of ONE SINGLE ballplyers who was on the White Sox let alone find home plate .

Because, it is tradition for the person that occupies the office of the presidency to call and congratulate a team that has won a championship. It is less about the individual who occupies the office and more about the recognition from the office of the presidency for great accomplishments. It is further proof how aloof and detached this president is. That he can be so shrill as to not perform the duties traditionally carried out by prior office holders. He has to be the laziest president ever to occupy that office. Have we seen one Omnibus bill get sent to Congress by this incompetent Marxist?

Here’s my take on it.

Being President is hard, but there are parts of the job that as an American you’d think you’d take some pleasure in. Tonight, all over America for example, hundreds of college footbal games are being played.

If you consider the money, effort, and talent represented by that effort, and then consider that no other country in the world could afford the luxury of such a thing, then you realize it is just a symptom of the miracle that is the American Experiment.

Baseball is an American game, and its been embraced by the world. A game predicated on the fallibility of its players, where a success rate of 34 percent is considered exceptional.

This year, two teams representing the heart of America, Missouri and Texas, played the Fall Classic to seven games. Game 6 went 11 innnings and will go down as one of the great game 6s in history.

As President, to take a minute to call the St. Louis Cardinals to congratulate the team in capturing one of the most difficult prizes in all of sports is simply a missed blessing in an unbelievably tough job.

You’d think one would savor such things. A glass of bourbon with senior staff gathered around the set right around the seventh inning. Your people getting the line ready. Small bets back and forth and maybe a bowl of popcorn. The last pitch, pandemonium, and senior staff goes home perhaps or stays for a nightcap. Your staff lets you know when, and you make the call.

Hell, he could have done it so that the press could pick it up and score some cheap political non-partisan publicity.

I, for one, pity the savage for his lack of fundamental appreciation for something so flawed and beautiful as baseball. Some men cannot be taught. They are doomed to learn only through their experiences, and for such men there is precious little margin.

The tragedy is that because he’s the leader of the Free World, we are all now codependents.

Truman was right. The shit you bring into the place stays with the next man, and its your job to see that it stays clean. You owe him that much, since each President realizes only after he takes office how difficult the job actually is.

"It seems President Reagan ended FDR's tradition of telephoning sports winners."

What year does it seem he did that?...here's his call to Sparky Anderson after the 1984 World Series...

From what I read, President Reagan quit making calls in 1986. But President Obama made a call to the Giants last fall, so that negates my point anyway. But now, the photo-op with the winning team is the big deal which is fine with me. The phone calls were always contrived and painful to listen to.

You know, I would look pretty goofy if I tried to do what he is doing, too. The difference is, as Indigo Montoya would say, “I am not left-handed.”
