How many miles is it to the New Madrid Fault from the epicenter?

A long way. It's a completely different set of faults.

It's just wrong to see that big (>5 magnitude) box in central OK!

That was my reaction as soon as I pulled up the USGS website. That big box is definately out of place.

This is very abnormal for Oklahoma

From a geologist's perspective it's pretty routine, actually. Had an earthquake nearby of almost the same magnitude in 1952, which in term of geology is seconds ago.

And central Oklahoma has clear seismic hazard shown on USGS seismic hazard maps.

USGS upgrades latest earthquake to 5.6; strongest on record in Oklahoma

Last Updated: 2 minutes ago

TULSA - The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that the latest in a series of earthquakes in Oklahoma is the strongest on record for the state.

According to the USGS , the earthquake that struck at 10:53 p.m. Saturday has been upgraded to a magnitude 5.6. The epicenter is four miles east of Sparks, Okla. in Lincoln County, 21 miles northeast of Shawnee.

Lincoln County Emergency Management is reporting significant damage.

Tremors were felt as far east as Little Rock and as far north as Wichita.

The earthquake broke the record set in 1952 in El Reno. That quake was recorded as a 5.5.

The latest comes after a shocking 4.8 earthquake that occurred in the early morning hours Saturday near Prague, Okla.

Aftershocks were felt for hours following Saturday’s first quake, which Amie Gibson, a research scientist for the Oklahoma Geological Survey, said was the strongest to hit the state in nearly sixty years.

That is, until this most recent quake.

Gibson said Saturday that aftershocks from the first earthquake could occur for days.

I’ve been living here in California for almost forty years, and earthquakes still scare the heck out of me.

Here near Wichita my house was bouncing up and down.

If this house is a rockin', don't come a knockin'!

My daughter tells me there was some damage at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee. I believe she was talking about Benedictine Hall.

I’m in OC and never really minded quakes until Sylmar and Northridge. Those two had me hiding under the bed and I was a long way from the epicenter. They were 6.6 and 6.7 respectively.

The only time I suffered property damage was with the Whittier Narrows quake. It was a 5.9 and the fault runs real close to my house.

Someone was blaming it on fracking for oil.

Of course. There never were unexpected earthquakes before fracking.

The gist of what I’m reading is that the recent surge in activity in Oklahoma is statistically significant but not unexpected. Geologically, I don’t doubt 1952 was mere moments ago, but we don’t get a lot of earthquakes like this in Oklahoma. Perhaps abnormal is the incorrect word for it. A 5.6 is normal activity, but it’s relatively rare to have 5.6 quakes in Oklahoma, right?

Just because it is not the New Madrid Fault doesn’t mean there couldn’t be serious action. the NM quake was not one quake, but at least 3 that were over 8, and dozens that were 7s and 6s. Since the area was sparsely settled at the time, it is hard to say what other faults might not have been affected at the time. The quakes started in 1811 and ended in spring 2012. A powerful quake was also felt in and around Caracas, Venezuela, killing around 20,000 people in March 2012. That is a lot farther from NM than OK, and seems to have been part of an overall period of activity in and near the Caribbean Plate. There was also a major volcanic eruption on the island St. Vincent in 1812. That is on the eastern edge of the CP. Venezuela is on the south side, and the Miss. valley is to the north.

I think I read recently that the NMF has a really big one every 4 or 5 hundred years, but a somewhat smaller but serious one in the next decade would not surprise me.

Thanks for the informative articles. We’re far more concerned about tornadoes than quakes. Let’s hope we don’t get anything stronger than this 5.6.

It is about 400 miles from Marked Tree Ark. which is on the west side of the New Madrid to Shawnee. Ok.

Shawnee small town, but has the best BBQ and emergency room treatment ever.

I live in Memphis right on the Mississippi and the New Madrid fault.

WTF? I thought this was only 2011. Watching Bama and LSU must have caused me to fall into a coma and now I have no idea of the date.

I live ed in Whittier for 26 years. The Narrows quake emptied my cousins pool and pretty much destroyed everything in their home.
