Occupy DC protesters violently injured peaceful Tea Party go-ers (some elderly) and attemped to force entry into the Washington Convention Center on Friday (Nov 4, 2011), where Americans for Prosperity is hosting their "Defending the American Dream Summit." The protesters also formed roadblocks, surrounding the convention center and only allowing non-luxury cars to pass. Parents with their children were caught in the violence. Some injured... Auto/pedestrian accidents occured as Occupy protestors rushed into the streets hurling profanities at drivers and attempting to block drivers' paths. This has to stop...

Dittos on the scroll past, brother.

ETL, what you post is relevant, timely, and educational.

Believe me, I don’t disagree completely with the view that too much of something is annoying. I know people who talk about someone posting on the NFL threads and how it drives them crazy...I have seen those postings, and I understand both why the guy posts them as he does, and why some people get irritated with it.

There used to be someone who posted a lot on FR (haven’t seen that person post lately) and they were zombie-like images of Hillary and some other liberal figures. I didn’t really like them much and wasn’t all that interested in them, but...hey. It was how he/she expressed themselves. I could read the posts and skip the images. (I do understand where that is problematic for someone surfing on a smartphone, or with a modem...)

But I just don’t personally feel the need to put the kibosh on them.

We have all seen the Freeper I See My Hands who posts everything with a box around it. I don’t mind it, it is individualistic and unique, but I saw another Freeper try to tear him a new one because of it. That bothered me, because it wasn’t really his formatting that bugged them, it was the basis of what he was saying that they disagreed with, but the person chose to attack his presentation instead.

There are a number of people who long for the good old days of unformatted text only.

I personally think that would be okay, but I enjoy threads so much more that have animated gifs in them, Photoshopped images and hyperlinks. Apart from the discourse, those are the highlights for me...

Bottom line, there is a lot of variability. When I see those things, I just skip over them. I try to take the good with bad, but hey, I am a glass half full person anyway.

As I said to the other poster who had a real issue with it, that is their opinion and I don’t have any say over that. It is theirs and they are entitled to it, as it should be.

That is a very good post.

Thanks for a reasoned reply free of personal insults.

I agree with much of what you said.

Ultimately I think the solution is for FR add a feature that allows a user to have a personal "block list". A small handful of people are responsible for 90% of the thread spam - and if we had that feature, I would just put those 3 or 4 people on my block list, and then I would never have to see their spam. Since personal insults and spam seems to be mostly all they post, I don't think I'd be missing much by blocking them.

I understand that the design of FR makes this feature difficult to add. One thing that I was thinking was to create a Greasemonkey script that would allow this - but I need FR to make a few small changes to make something like that work reliably (basically, but a <SPAN> tag around each post, with an attribute indicating the poster).

Well, do note that two people were run over for blocking someone’s car.
Note also the driver was not detained.

They block cars by standing in front of them, and get pissed when someone panics and runs over someone. Idiots. No way am I going to stop in the middle of a riot, I have seen cars burned by mobs with the occupants inside.

From now on, my .40 travels with me and I am buying a spare clip. Somehow 10 rounds does not seem enough anymore.

Better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.

We’ve held elections during all-out civil war.
There is no excuse for suspending elections.
I suggest FReepers get involved as poll workers - to ensure the polls are there and open on time, regardless of orders from on high.

He would have been completely in the right.
The first rule of self-defense is “don’t be there”; when someone is trying to keep you “there”, it’s not for your well-being.

The original reply to PoliticalMom, the one that got this all started, was a thinly veiled personal attack.

It didn’t take much to entice ETL to pull back the veil, in the more recent posts, including yours at 337 Scutter (sorry didn’t se that one earlier), and firing both barrels at “too stupid to be informed Freepers” with personal attacks.

The posts are consistent with what I think ETLs opinion of the rest of us has been from the beginning, that of an elitist.

Well, I guess I would err on the side of adjusting my posting behavior somewhat if it were directed at me. But hey, that’s me. I figure I have bigger fish to expend my emotional energy on...I got (nicely) called on it one time when I used large fonts to make a point. Now, I don’t do it often, probably once every twenty or fifty posts, but someone took exception to it.

I figure, okay. I can do without big, red fonts if it brings someone else’s blood pressure down. Not important to me, but it is to them.

Yeah. I would use it, because there are a few people I don’t really care to see their posts, but as I said to another freeper...I don’t have too many posting mountains I personally want to die on.

If someone really dislikes something (say, animated gifs, which I am quite fond of and a collector of) and it is driving them crazy, I can be more sparing and judicious in my posting of them, if it makes someone else feel better.

I don’t view it as an impingement of my free speech...just speaking to a different audience is all.

I try to make the community here more harmonious if I can...:) I spend so much time here, if I had to keep dodging people because this one didn’t like this and that, it wouldn’t be very fun or informational for me.

I really wasn’t trying to start a flame war with ETL - which is why I stopped responding once she replied with the personal insult. I honestly thought that maybe she didn’t realize how obnoxious and distracting these repeated spam posts are.

BTW - if someone wants to avoid the animated gifs, there are extensions for most browsers that will allow you to do that. For example, I use the Chrome browser, and I see they have an extension called “Gif Stopper” that will disable the animations on a page if you hit the “escape” key.

If everyone has a concealed carry license and shows up at the polls armed....I’m betting there won’t be ‘too’ much in the way of intimidation tactics by leftie thugs. At least....

not more than once....heh.
