Sorting out the details of his shooting death is now the focus of multiple agency investigations
MATHIS A man killed about noon Thursday by a border patrol agent near Mathis was a 20-year-old from Mexico, authorities said Friday.
Sorting out the details of his shooting death is now the focus of multiple agency investigations.
U.S. Border Patrol agents attempted to stop a Lincoln SUV in the 5700 block of Farm-to-Market Road 666, when the driver refused and authorities said he tried to run over an agent in an attempt to get away. That agent then shot the man in the chest, officials said.
San Patricio County Pct. 5 Justice of the Peace Amanda Cardeñas pronounced the 20-year-old dead at 11:46 a.m., she said. He was from Mexico, she said, but would not release his name because she didn't believe his family had been yet been notified. The Mexican consulate was contacted to help, Cardeñas said.
Rosie Huey, a spokeswoman for U.S. Border Patrol, Rio Grande Valley Sector, said the primary investigation was turned over to San Patricio County and the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Rangers.
"The status of the border patrol agent who shot won't be determined until the investigations are complete," Huey said. "People were taken into custody, and were questioned, but the details won't be available until the investigations are complete."
San Patricio Sheriff Leroy Moody said there were at least three people taken into custody, and authorities didn't know how many others may have escaped.
"We handled the crime scene, and will do anything else related to it like any other shooting case, and will turn our information over the district attorney," Moody said.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Office of the Inspector General also is investigating, said Gregory Palmore, with homeland security investigations and enforcement operations.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation also is involved because there are two issues: someone was killed and it was an officer-involved shooting, Palmore said.
"We're looking at the human smuggling aspect only," he said.

That was my first thought. But if the Rangers are involved, any Locals that have been bought by the Cartels will not get to take the BP Agent out. (legally)
The officers need larger capacity mags!
Get your kicks... on Route 666.
You Texas Rangers protect this BP officer from the DOJ.
Well, that sounds like a good 10-15 for voluntary manslaughter. /s
Border Patrol: only police organization in America where doing their job gets them the sentence the perp SHOULD have recieved, who instead is given immunity and a Green Card to testify against the agent.
Next, he needs to use a recoiless rifle.
The problem is if the feds want to get him, they will. The feds will just try him for something else after the state gets through with whatever they do. I have seen it happen several times- if state finds no reason to prosecute or a state jury finds them innocent the feds will just go after them until they get them on something. There really is no protection. One of the many reasons I cannot imagine why anyone is willing to be a Border Patrol agent.
Interesting how zero wanted immunity to keep our troops in Iraq.
It seems our Border Patrol agents need immunity.
I’m surprised anyone wants the job after all the attacks they have taken from the GOVERNMENT.
Looks like American Citizens and LEO’s that don’t stand down are the only one WITHOUT rights in Obama’s AMERICA.
Given the current political situation the answer is of course the Border agent is gonna get screwed it’s the primae directive of the current junta.
