Bill Clinton: Let presidents serve three terms

By: Tim Mak November 8, 2011 08:48 AM EST

Three times could be a charm - but not for him.

Former president Bill Clinton said Tuesday that presidents should be able to run for a third term so long as they take off some time after their second term.

“I’ve always though that should be the rule,” he said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “I think as a practical matter, you couldn’t apply this to anyone who has already served, but going forward I personally believe that should be the rule.”

Clinton made the remark in the context of a question posed by Morning Joe co-host Joe Scarborough, who said that many wished that Clinton could run again.

“Shouldn’t a president be able to take two terms, take time off and run again? Shouldn’t Americans have that choice?” asked Scarborough. He cited former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who led his country during World War II and then again in the 1950s, as an example.

The two-term limit for the presidency is mandated by the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified after Franklin D. Roosevelt won four consecutive terms in the 1930s and 1940s.

Earlier in the morning, Clinton said that he does not spend time thinking about whether the country would be better off under the leadership of his wife, Hillary Clinton.

Or maybe a Constitutional Amendment. Whichever is easier.

FUBC. You should be taking time off wearing an orange jumpsuit in Ft. Leavenworth for your treason against the United States. Along with your worthless fleabag wife.

Yeah. I doubt ANY of Clinton's fantasies include his wife.

The third and fourth term of FDR gave half the world to the communists. By the time Truman arrived it was too late.

I bet I am the first Freeper on record to say that Bill Clinton would give it a try...

I’ve actually stated twice in the past 2 months that Bill Clinton would love to be president a 3rd time - and if he did find a way into this cycle - he’d win in a landslide.

Why? The current Republican slate of candidates is downright awful. That’s all there’s to it.

=8-)

Oh Lord. Three terms with George W? Three terms with Clinton? I don’t think so. Both of them were awful with two terms. Why make the American people suffer even more.

Hillary would probably kill him, if he got a third term while she got denied the chance to run.

The only way I'd go along with this is if it extended to members of Congress as well.
IOW, a total of 3 terms (12 years) for President, 2 terms (12 years) for Senator and 6 terms (12 years) for Representative.
And, since this needs to be a Constitutional amendment it would only take effect after the amendment were ratified, regardless of who or which party was in power at the time.

I remember Ronald Reagan saying as much years ago. He said if the people like the job the president is doing, why not? Of course, I am not in favor of Presidue Clinton being around for that long.
