You know, with the stigma of Ithaca and NYC on us NYers, too many people (as in FReepers) consider NY a lost cause, and criticize us who are here for various reasons, blaming us for the condition of our state.

And yet, here this goes to show that Upstate NY really IS conservative, every bit as red as other parts of the country. The cities overwhelm us in the bigger elections, but here in the small town, we’re conservative.

Yesterday when I went to vote, the ballot was overwhelmingly Republican/conservative. Easily half the open positions had only one person running; a candidate for the Republican/Conservative parties and NO candidate for the Democratic/Liberal parties.

I KNOW NY gets a bum rap. I was born and raised there to 4th and 5th generation New Yorkers, and to this day know several conservatives leading quiet lives there, even in Manhattan.

I blame it all on NY’s being so attractive it draws libs from all over the country. The natives tend to be more conservative than the imports. We saw that writ large back in 2001.

Upstate New York, that is 100 miles away from NYC, may be "conservative," but the folks who live there don't get off the couch to vote all that much. Very low turnouts are the norm.

Now that could be that they rightly feel that their million votes will be wiped out by the sophisticates and Third Worlders of NYC, who run about 3 million votes, counting the dead and double-dippers, fake absentees, etc.
