Feds investigate if Penn State officials violated US law

Federal officials will investigate whether Penn State officials violated federal law by failing to report alleged sexual abuse by the school's former football defense coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Justin Hamilton, a spokesman for Education Secretary Arne Duncan, confirmed to NBC News that the department was launching a probe into whether there were possible violations of a federal law called the Clery Act. It requires colleges and universities to publish and distribute information about criminal offenses -- including sex offenses -- that are reported to school authorities. Penn State officials were formally notified of the investigation in a letter received Wednesday, officials said.

"If these allegations of sexual abuse are true then this is a horrible tragedy for those young boys," Duncan said in a statement. "If it turns out that some people at the school knew of the abuse and did nothing or covered it up, that makes it even worse. Schools and school officials have a legal and moral responsibility to protect children and young people from violence and abuse."

Oh no, child molestation is a-okay if it means the school football team wins.

not that it changes what we think of this man's character, but... while I keep seeing multiple references to "young boys", this was a college football program correct? Would that not imply that the students there are mostly over the age of 18?

I just find it very curious that there is no mention of the boy's ages in any of the stories I've seen.

If anyone here has seen the ages mentioned, please pass that link along if you would

This is what happens when coaches make a million a year. They are willing to look the other way at even a homosexual rape of a 10 year old boy if it means it won’t endanger their lucrative salary.

Time to cut salaries for all college coaches by 90%.

Take a look at the indictment. The victims were all young boys.

They’re children. One was 10 years old. I’m new to the story myself. They apparently had children programs.

These were preteens being “helped” through a charity run by Sandusky.

No, they were boys. From the article:

“March 2002 in which Sandusky sodomized a naked 10-year-old boy in the locker room shower.”

The fact that there are such things as federal crimes is a crime.

This is a local and state matter.

Here is the grand jury report:

http://www.attorneygeneral.gov/uploadedFiles/Press/Sandusky-Grand-Jury-Presentment.pdf

It’s 23 pages. If you don’t throw up while reading it, and make it all the way through, your questions will be answered.

I teach in NJ, I would be charged with a felony if I fail to report a suspected case of sexual abuse.

The law actually reads that I must report it to law enforcement.
