Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Yes, many questions. The first being, when Sandusky left the team in ‘99, what was the reason? Did Paterno know? Did the sports writers know? As usual, the media is creating a firestorm while at the same time covering for these creeps by not reporting what they really know.

He’s been court ordered to stay away from his own grand kids

Yeah, like that matters to a guy who set up a foundation to find troubled kids to exploit. Since he set this group up in 1977, I fear the victim list is going to number over a thousand.

I really think they should forfeit the rest of the season, allow the players to transfer, bring in a whole new regime, maybe even take next season off, because there is no way they could overhaul the program and be ready to be competitive by next season.

This will be like a death in my family. Rural PA took much of their identity from JoePa and Penn State.

And that is what is sad, so many people know everything there is to know about a coach or team, but can't tell you squat about what goes on in today's government or economy. Their only source of news, and I have a few family members like this, only comes from the sports pages.

Sandusky founded The Second Mile charity in 1977, working with at-risk youths

Got it. Never mind my previous post. I assume these were the assaulted kids.

I’m no expert on crime but if Paterno knew this was going on and didn’t say a word, can’t he be charged with something?

Kinda par for the course in PA. I mean the whole mysterious death thing not the kiddie thing.

No, the key question is why didn't the graduate assistant go in there, rescue the boy, and then call 911??!?! How could you leave a child there, then THE NEXT DAY, tell someone?

Yeah, yeah, loads of fumbles followed, but I would never leave a child in that situation, ever.

I am saddened by this whole mess. I am equally disgusted by the fact that anyone, particularly those involved in mentoring children in athletics, has taken advantage of that position of trust by mollesting them. There is a special corner in hell reserved for the quilty party(s).

A man who has devoted his life to building young men and a storied football program should have done more. When first allerted, he should have kept the grad asst. in his office and immediately called the police to come out and speak to him, then, only after calling the authorities should he have called the University President. I’m confident that, given the same circumstances again, he would have handled it differently. However - that and a buck will buy you a soda. Nothing can undo the damage that has been inflicted upon innocent children. That much is unfortunate.

I, being a huge college football fan and former player, am sad that JoePa needs to go out in this manner. 46 years at Penn State - where he and his wife have given virtually every penny they have ever earned back to the university (donating over $4mil and then raising $14 mil to build the Paterno library) and built a legacy that will forever be unmatched. His commitment to his “Grand Experiment” allowed Penn State players to always excel in their studies while being formidable on the field of play. He wrote the book on melding athletics and academics. For that to be torn apart makes me sad for JoePa. It is a sad day for those children involved, it is a sad day for college football, but it is also a sad day for Joe and Sue Paterno. I join them in feeling a sense of loss.

In 1998, a PSU security guard told Sandusky to stop taking showers with kids. SHOWERS WITH KIDS!!!! How and the HELL did Paterno not know this was going on!!!!

Sandusky was reportedly on campus last week!!!! The entire timeline on Sandusky is nothing more than a university and coaching staff enabling a sexual predator and turning a blind eye. They are complicit in the crimes and should pay the price.

End PSUs season now. Let the players transfer to any school they want with no penalty of sitting out. Fire every single football staff member. Fire campus security. Gut the AD department and the entire administrative staff. And burn the football facilities to the ground.

Start over from scratch.

You both make a good point. The University would lose a lot of revenue if they cancelled the rest of the season. Probably would be in their best interest.

There's something I don't understand about this story that I haven't found in the coverage for days. What was a "boy" (or "boys") doing in the shower at Penn State in the first place?

Because Penn State gave the "retired" Saldusky approval to use uni facilities for his activities.

Tried, convicted, and executed by the press. Congratulation to the board of trustees bowing to public pressure, which seems to be de rigor these days, instead of showing any semblance of leadership or loyalty. They should have placed him on administrative leave instead. This would have allowed this to get resolved in court, then, if he had been proven to be involved in covering this up in any way, then they could have taken action. In my opinion this is premature and reactionary.

Story came on as Breaking News on FoxNews Boston. They said the trustees had called out riot police before announcing the firings.

Good move.
