Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

This is the way it should be.

Protecting children is more important than winning football games. The people at Penn State got it mixed up and they need to go.

You made a good point yesterday about the away games being especially brutal. They will be.

It needed to happen. Sorry Joe, I wish you had done more, too. Those victims will never be the same. And Sandusky should spend the rest of his life in a very rough prison.

I could elaborate on an experience of my own in my younger years (and as a troubled youth)..and although nothing as egregious as what happened to those boys heppened to me...it was scary as hell. But I must say, when I finally had the nerve to tell my foster father what I was up against, he got me away from those who ..lets just say..had their own agendas. I will always be grateful to him.

It is going to be an absolute circus this Saturday, they should have considered shutting down the football program for the rest of the year.

Sandusky has been free on bail for at least a day now.

He’s been court ordered to stay away from his own grand kids.

Like a court order ever kept a pervert from acting.

Why didn’t the witness call the cops instead of going to Paterno?

This is the Marcy Park part of the story. A District Attorney dismissed all charges against the gay pedophile in 1998. In 2005 the DA went "missing" and in June 2011 declared "legally dead"...

I mean this is like a Hollywood mob movie!

To the mods, you guys rock as usual :D

a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

There's something I don't understand about this story that I haven't found in the coverage for days. What was a "boy" (or "boys") doing in the shower at Penn State in the first place?

It is going to be an absolute circus this Saturday,

Could even be a good drinking game.

For every "PEDO STATE" banner or t-shirt you see in the stands, take a drink!

Homosexuals are a protected species. You cannot look upon their actions and declare, "That is wrong". It is risky to condemn them.

Of course, when it all hits the fan, people will demand, "Why didn't you do something?? Didn't you know how wrong that was??"

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. PC is cultural Marxism, and it is intended to create a dysfunctional society.

Mission accomplished.

If I was a parent of any of those students, I would be at that campus bringing them home until this cools off. Kids, even the smart ones, don’t always think with cool heads. and groupthink in a highly charged situation like this, will create nothing more than a mob. Get your kids home for a week. Better yet, the school should take the leadership in this and cancel all school activity for a week and send kids home...a cooling off period.

These were at risk kids - so broken homes, absent fathers or even mothers - easy prey. Often the kids don’t tell their mothers what is going on so you can’t blame the parent in this case. One mother did notice her son had wet hair and questioned him - he said he showered with Sandusky and she did notify the police. It appears that big college money/power tends to make even local cops look the other way. No one did the right thing for these kids.

Police in riot gear deal with Penn State students gathering to support Joe Paterno

STATE COLLEGE — More than a thousand Penn State students are moving between the campus and downtown, chanting in support of football coach Joe Paterno, whose job has been questioned over his handling of sex-abuse allegations involving a former coach.

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is facing charges he sexually assaulted eight boys over a 15-year period.

Crowds began to gather around 10 p.m. on Beaver Avenue. After police in riot gear told them to move along, the students moved to Old Main. They sang the alma mater, professed their love for Paterno and profanely denounced Sandusky. They pointed toward Penn State president Graham Spanier’s still-lit office. Then, after a brief “back to Beaver” chant, the crowd returned to Beaver Avenue.

For once the media may prove useful. They are reportedly camped outside Sandusky’s house 24/7.

Let's see if I have this straight: Grad Student sees the reprehensible act, leaves and tells father instead of yelling "hey, stop!", then dad tells Paterno something. Paterno has no direct knowledge of the event nor do we know exactly how it was described to Paterno. For all we know, dad downplayed it. Yet we assume Joe knew enough to make a direct complaint to the cops.

Nevertheless, Paterno timely passes along these 2nd party allegations to the AD who has the duty to investigate and report. We don't know how often Joe followed up with the AD nor do we know what the AD told Joe about the progress of the investigation. But everyone is certain that Paterno should have called the cops with unsubstantiated hearsay.

Should Paterno have done more? probably. But the truth is that right now we and most of the commentators commenting don't know what Joe knew when this was playing out in real time. That doesn't seem to stop anyone though.

Let's back up to when the Dad told Joe. Joe's advice to the kid should have been "you need to make a report about what you saw."
