Let's see if I have this straight: Grad Student sees the reprehensible act, leaves and tells father instead of yelling "hey, stop!", then dad tells Paterno something. Paterno has no direct knowledge of the event nor do we know exactly how it was described to Paterno. For all we know, dad downplayed it. Yet we assume Joe knew enough to make a direct complaint to the cops.

Nevertheless, Paterno timely passes along these 2nd party allegations to the AD who has the duty to investigate and report. We don't know how often Joe followed up with the AD nor do we know what the AD told Joe about the progress of the investigation. But everyone is certain that Paterno should have called the cops with unsubstantiated hearsay.

Should Paterno have done more? probably. But the truth is that right now we and most of the commentators commenting don't know what Joe knew when this was playing out in real time. That doesn't seem to stop anyone though.

Let's back up to when the Dad told Joe. Joe's advice to the kid should have been "you need to make a report about what you saw."

You might want to read this timeline . Sandusky was caught and investigated by the police in 1998 - he "retires" from PSU in 1999. I find it hard to believe no one in the community knew he had been interviewed since he admitted he showered naked with various boys, even hugging them while naked.

And one of us has the wrong information regarding who told Paterno. Everything I have read says the grad asst went to Paterno's home, not his father reporting it second hand.

No you do not have it correct. Paterno said Mcqueary (not his dad) told him it was “fondling or an act of a sexual nature” in his testimony to the grand jury.

You should read the grand jury report if you want to know the facts of what happened.

Everyone is dirty in this.

I would be willing to give the benefit of doubt to every one except for Second Mile. We could assume they all thought the investigation was fruitless.

Once Sandusky starts with Second Mile, which had a high profile, they all should have thought to themselves “oh shoot” and followed up again.

I think Paterno comes from a generation that chooses not to think about these things unless they have to.

He seems like a good man, and the reality of what happened will probably haunt him, if not kill him.

I do NOT think that Joe Paterno did not know of locker room rumors of Sandusky’s sexual proclivities! He worked with him for YEARS,

He knew.

Thanks for the calm and collected post amongst the out-for-blood crowd. Sandusky probably did horrific crap, but this whole thing hasn’t been brought to trial. It’s like a national lynch mob going here.

Do you really believe this uproar is mere overreaction? It is ALL in response to the grand jury report. You are going to feel completely stupid.

Dad's advice to son (hypothetically speaking). Son, you got a big one. Go talk to Joe. Maybe you can get the WR coaching job out of this.
