Mike Pence, Mitch Daniels, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush — conservatives all year long have been wishing, yearning, even begging people who aren’t in the presidential race to enter the fray and save them from what seems like a frighteningly uninspiring field of candidates. Yet could it be that the sharpest, most accomplished, most campaign-savvy, and most full-spectrum conservative in a quarter-century of presidential contests has been in the contest all along, working harder than anybody, making at least as much intellectual sense as anybody, never blowing a debate, and never failing to stand on principle?
The man of the hour could be that perennial underdog, Rick Santorum.

I actually wanted Mike Pence, too. (Well, at least after some more unelectable choices, like Tom Coburn, for example.) But Rick Santorum is my first choice among the current group. I would settle for a good conservative. I would be content with Cain or Bachmann, and maybe with Perry. (But I would give one of my teeth for a Tom Coburn/Jim DeMint administration.)

I actually liked him ... until I saw his debate performances.
Seems to me that there are an awful lot of part time FReepers who show up for campaigns and pimp their RINOs.

Do not underestimate the Mormon machine! They are pros at PR and image making. Mitt hides behind an expensive paper mask! Newt has been a flip flopper forever (catch a few vudeis at today’s thedougurbanskishow.com), and though smart, the smartest among us often have the least common sense. He has proven to be a loose canon in the past.
So let us hope the voting public is not fickle. The leading candidate is Herman Cain, our last chance to reclaim our Constitutional Republic! Mr. Cain is the real deal!

You on the other hand had a whale of a time defending Dubya and all the other assorted big govt nonsense that he and the GOP put forth. Its pretty cute that NOW you’re all about purity. Must piss you off that you can’t make your cheerleading posts disappear down the rabbit hole huh?
Santorum supports ethanol subsidies (this will stop Global Warming) and funding Amtrak projects. He prefers Arlen Specter to Pat Toomey and has supported community block development programs. He has triangulated his position on abortion (in 1990). He is a fraud. He has repeatedly voted to push the country into debt. Thank you, no more RINOs.

Amen. Newt is a great debater, and I would certainly nominate him for president of the Debate Society. But as a candidate that can get the Grass Roots out (aka, the Tea Party), I’m not so sure. I still remember 1996. People never really trusted Bob Dole, even though he came through against Clinton during those first two scary years. Dole simply had too much history.
No matter what anyone tells me, I will NEVER forgive Newt for sitting on the couch with Pelosi. He had time to think about it...probably weeks, yet he still chose to do it - that says something about what he might do as president. Even though I HATE my governor (Perry), I’m still less bothered by his debates than by Newt’s stunt. In Perry’s case, he needed to memorize stuff (which he’s not good at, as shown by his college grades) and then think quick. Newt had PLENTY OF TIME to think over this Pelosi stunt and it’s long-term implications...yet he STILL chose to do it. Not good, not good at all.
Senator’s DeMint and Dr. Coburn are exceptional and both have been in private business. I think both men would make excellent presidents, but neither are running.
Former US Senator Santorum is running as a defeated senator and that doesn’t bode well for his chances.
I am so fresh out of vomit.
