Why Not Santorum?
National Review Online ^ | November 9, 2011 | Quin Hillyer

Posted on 11/11/2011 5:08:27 PM PST by Engraved-on-His-hands

Mike Pence, Mitch Daniels, Paul Ryan, Bobby Jindal, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush — conservatives all year long have been wishing, yearning, even begging people who aren’t in the presidential race to enter the fray and save them from what seems like a frighteningly uninspiring field of candidates. Yet could it be that the sharpest, most accomplished, most campaign-savvy, and most full-spectrum conservative in a quarter-century of presidential contests has been in the contest all along, working harder than anybody, making at least as much intellectual sense as anybody, never blowing a debate, and never failing to stand on principle?

The man of the hour could be that perennial underdog, Rick Santorum.

He comes across too homophobic for the general election.

You obviously missed the ‘06 Senate battle here in PA. They threw everything at Santorum and all they had was that he had a residence in the DC area for his kids to be closer and they went to school there. That was it. The guy is clean.

I like Mike Pence, but alas he is a non-starter. We have to pick from the onstage crowd. Herman for now is all I have. Michelle is great, but no traction. Perry won’t take the rocks out of his mouth. Newt has two ex wives ready to attack him.

Let’s see, Cain couldn’t get out of the Primaries for his Senate run, Newt resigned, Bachmann is afraid to run for anything outside her district in that state. That leaves Perry. Is that your guy?

I won’t argue with you too hard...you’re a lot closer. My only point is that we don’t get to see what the media has in their files (today) until one of our guys gets to the top. Even in a Senate race, I’m not all that sure that they will throw everything they have.

Because Rick has spent every second of what little debate time he had reminding us of what a consummate POLITICIAN he is.
In this election season, that is the last thing we want to hear. And besides that, he did everything FIRST. I’ve been waiting for him to give his Italian immigrant ancestors credit for discovering America...first.
It’s about as bad as Bachmann claiming that the price of two Happy Meals would solve the deficit problem.

I could have backed Pence. I was hoping Pence would have spent the last few years blasting Obama campaign-style like Sarah Palin was doing. I think he could have solid support if he had been doing that.

I have no desire for Rooster Rick as president. His coworkers at Kirkpatrick Lockhart gave him that nickname because he was always crowing about himself and they all regarded him as a subpar attorney. A guy who could not win reelection against an empty suit for a senate seat will not win a nationwide election.

Conservatives “have been wishing, yearning, even begging” Jeb Bush and Mitch Daniels to run?

I take it that Quin Hillyer hits the crack pipe.

His ability to help win PA could be huge

But he can't promise that, he lost his reelection bid by double digits. I don't know if Pennsylvanians really hate him that much or not, but he's definitely not their favorite son.

Absolutely no “Gravitas”!

Besides being easily led to support other candidate who are pure crap for the conservatives!

He comes across as whiny, spoiled, divisive and sanctimonious — plus, unfortunately — he has what I call a “punch-me” face. I try to like the guy, being as I am in PA ... but Rick has not make a good impression in the debates I’ve watched at all. And yeah, the Specter endorsement ... big minus.

He supported Specter over Toomey.

Which is bad. But now we’re giving Newt a 2nd look.

And Newt’s list of RINO bad and adultery bad is much longer than Santorum’s.
