Quinnipiac: Nelson(D) 42%, Mack(R) 40% (Nelson in trouble in Florida Senate race)
Quinnipiac University Poll ^ | 11/11/2011

Posted on 11/12/2011 10:47:03 PM PST by floridarunner01

By tossing his hat into the ring, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack has transformed the campaign for Florida's U.S. Senate seat, putting him far ahead of the field for the Republican nomination and in a statistical dead heat in the general election, with 40 percent to incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson's 42 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

Mack, son of the former U.S. senator who bears his same name, gets 32 percent of the vote in the GOP primary, while none of the other four mostly unknown aspirants get more than 9 percent, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds.

--snip--

"The entrance of Congressman Connie Mack into the Senate race changes what had been shaping up as an easy reelection for Sen. Bill Nelson into a tough fight that the incumbent could lose," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The fact that Mack is essentially tied with Nelson, who has been a statewide political figure for two decades, should set off warning bells at Democratic headquarters."

Nelson is terrible, but Mack is a scumbag. Rick Perry’s comment about opposition to illegals (”heartless”) didn’t come close to Mack’s comparing support for the Arizona law as being like “Nazi Germany” (so guess what that makes us ?) Mack can go *uck himself. His wife has to go, too.

I’d like to see it too. I know the left isn’t happy with Nelson either. They think he is a traitor. I think the shift in Florida politics will bear fruit. The state has gotten progressively more red the past few years. Obama has did a great job of that.

I explicitly remember the primary season where Rubio came in as an unknown and was in single digits at this time in the program as well. The thing I have not seen is someone who can articulate the broad conservative message outside of McCallister. Although Hasner is buds with Marco, he smacks of a big government politician to me and at this time fails to inspire.

I don’t know where the polling was done but I can most assuredly tell you that Nelson is lot liked at all in the Space Coast area in addition to the entire North. The problem also with this poll is it combines all the republicans against Nelson.

I agree that Mack has some of the same big government baggage and I am not sold on him. We have until I think it is August for the state office primaries and I would think things can change as dramatically this time as they did in 2010.

Unfortunately, you are right. Mack is a pro-illegal hack who insults good Americans who want the law followed.

I understand that. The bigger point is that Nelson is polling at only 42%. I know its a year out but this guy is an incumbant that has been well known in Florida for 20 years and been a Senator for 12. Many thought he would be easily re-elected. The poll shows he is vulnerable. That’s good news.

And even if it is Mack, it’s better than Nelson. If nothing else it would give the GOP one more seat towards a majority control. Even if he can’t be counted on for every single vote...he would get us closer to knocking Harry Reid off the throne.

If the primary poll is right we have our work cut out for us. Mack was way out in front.

32% Mack
9% Peppy LePew
6% McCallister
2% Hasner
2% Miller (Craig Miller, haven’t noticed him before)

2% for Hasner is epic fail.

With the filing deadline not utill June and the primary not until August I’m not sure Florida Republicans are paying attention yet.

Nelson went for obamacare while many protestors stood outside his office begging him not to support such a horror. I was one of them so this isn’t second hand. He has been on the left vanguard of everything he can find to insult Floridians. When he gets in trouble he trots down to the Miami area and gins up support with the retired & Jewish population; he wrongly assumes they have enough votes to keep him in office. I would vote for Bozo the clown before casting a vote for this weasel.

No, the poll doesn’t combine all Relublican candidates against Bill Nelson. Quinnipiac College conducted two polls, one of registered Republicans for the GOP primary and another of registered voters for the general. Mack was well ahead in the primary poll, and in the general-election poll trailed Bill Nelson 42%-40% in a head-to-head matchup.

You make good points. Mack is not ideal but it would be better to have a Republican in that seat. If they manage to take a Senate majority and dump Reid as leader I think it will only be by a narrow margin so we must take every one we can. Virginia, Montana, Missouri are other states Republicans should win but those races are 50-50 so nothing is guaranteed. The other Nelson, Ben of Nebraska, is not out of it yet. Scott Brown sadly is vulnerable in Mass.

Bill Nelson was elected to the House in 1978, so he has been on the scene for more than 30 years. It is true that for him to be polling at only 42% shows he is weak. Let’s hope this is his last term.

I stand corrected. But do you disagree that it is way too soon? Especially when considering his stance on the Arizona law? This is a snap in time before any vetting at all. Interesting, still the same. The fact that Nelson only got 42% as an incumbent cannot make his millennium.
