Hercules was adopted by a couple in Hillsboro, Ohio, who saw the ailing 135-pound St. Bernard at the animal shelter and feared he would be euthanized.

Six hours later, the heroic canine repaid his new owners' kindness when a dark-clothed thug broke into the couple's house.

The man had cut the phone and cable lines running to the home of Rubert and Elizabeth Littler and had sneaked into their basement.

Dogs are great.

I had some icky surgery this summer and was in the hospital almost a month. When I got home our pittie laid on the sofa next to me and cried. Now, he will not leave my side. I’m working from home and he lays on the floor next to my desk chair and if I get up he follows.

If I can’t sleep (like now) he’s right next to me on the sofa. It’s very comforting to be guarded so well.

That is so nice.

Our St. Bernard, Sasha, is also a “little” one weighing in at 135 lbs.

No dog for an old (52) man like me. Unbelievable power.

Her brother is 175 lbs.

Thank you Hercules !!

Dogs just know things. Don’t know how or why, but they do.

I wasn't a dog person until recently, but our runt of the litter Ozzy Shepherd-Lab mix has converted me, after living with him 10 years.

Also a shelter dog adoptee. I hope he never has the need to chase an intruder, but he is a fantastic barker when anyone is within 30 feet of the house.

Kind of ironic that a dog needs to be rescued from a shelter.

Good boy: Hercules attacked an intruder to defend his new found home - breaking through a screen door to give chase to the thug

Oh don’t be such a cry baby. I got my little bitty Honey-Bunny at the pound from their isolation section, you know the dogs they are going to kill because they are to sick or damaged to be worth the vet bills. She has 23% hip displacier, she had a systemic blood infection and was severely malnourished. She weighed 48 pounds and was about 2 months old when I bailed her out of death row. They made me sign a waiver stating that I would never bring her back to any animal shelter for any reason upon threat of all kinds of violations I can’t even remember, and some kind of legal action. Took my baby to the vet the next morning, 2247.00 later (that was my M1A rifle money by the way) I have the best little girl any body could ever ask God for. She is now a 147 pound beauty and still a bit of a puppy, she wont be a full grown adult for about another 6 months. I am 62 years old and just playing with her in the orchard is enough to give me a massive coronary arrest, but I am sure she will lick and slobber me back to good health, if she doesn’t drown me.
PS My vet told me that in 35 years of practice he had never seen a dog with ricketts before, I guess that is why she likes oranges and tangerines. Honey is an English Mastiff and my other little puppy is Jack, he is a Newfoundland Labrador cross. The vet tells me Jack is to fat at 127 pounds but I figure at 18 years old he deserves to sit around and watch the world go by if he wants to.

I truly wish I could, but unfortunately I am a technological idiot and I don't know how. My wife will be up to the farm on her Christmas break and I will make her teach me. I would love to show the whole world my Honey bunny and my Jacky boy but I am a hopeless luddite when it comes to this beast I am typing on. I hate to admit it , but I am still a 2 fingered typest.

'But now we don't know what we're going to do. I think he's more or less earned his right to stay.'

Really? Do you think so?
The only bad thing he did was not breaking the perps leg.
Well, I guess they can train that into him.
Otherwise, great story and good Sunday morning post.

Absolutely beautiful story about your Honey-Bunny! Yes, she was expensive but she is well worth it. Sounds like you have two fantastic dogs and when those two big ones romp around... it must be comical!

I was waiting for the part where the family was arrested and the dog taken away because it bit the intruder. That happened in the UK after all.
