San Francisco (CNN) -- Police in riot gear moved into the Occupy Oakland encampment early Monday, tearing down tents and arresting some protesters, the latest effort by city officials across the country to gain control over a movement that some leaders say has become a public safety and health threat.
Oakland, California, police, aided by dozens of officers from nearby jurisdictions, arrested 32 people in the effort to clear Frank Ogawa Plaza near City Hall before dawn Monday, Interim Chief Howard Jordan said. There were no reports of injuries or complaints of abuse, he said.
The camp had become an unbearable drain on city resources, an economic threat to nearby businesses and a danger to public safety, Mayor Jean Quan said.
"The encampment became a place where we had repeated violence and this week a murder. We had to bring the camp to an end before more people were hurt," she said.

Jail time, fines, work details, etc. — the cities should have thrown the book at them for the mayhem and mess they caused.
The right to peaceably assemble ends at the point it infringes on the Constitutional rights of the rest of the people in America.
All these lefty Mayors from Oakland to NYC gave these clowns cover because the radicals supported their own Commie Pinko ideology. Now that this vermin and filth at the Occupy events have been exposed as human debris and anti Americans, these same Leftist leaders want to brush the whole thing under the rug like it never happened. Too bad for them, these loser are itching for a fight and they are not giving up on their radical communes that easily.

The Occupy Movement, from a media standpoint, is turning out just like the so-called Arab Spring.
At first, all the lefties and the MSM embraced and celebrated it, because they thought it supported their agenda.
Now that it’s turning ugly, they’re going to be reporting on it less and less.
Me thinks you’re right, there were assaults on the MSM types for not portraying OWS as pure as the driven snow.
