Teen Suspended From N.J. School For Wearing Confederate Flag Shirt
CBS New York ^ | Nov.14, 2011

EAST WINDSOR, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A 14-year-old New Jersey girl has been suspended for wearing a sweatshirt with a Confederate flag on it.

Many see it as a symbol of hate and racism, but this teenager claims its part of her heritage, reports CBS 2’s Christine Sloan.

Torri Albrecht said Monday when she showed up to her middle school wearing a sweatshirt with the confederate flag. She said her vice principal gave her a choice:

“He said I had to take off the sweatshirt or flip it inside out or face the consequences,” Albrecht said.

But the eighth grader, who was born in Virginia and lived there just a year, said she refused to take it off.

“It shows I am from the South. I am proud of where I came from and it shows my heritage,” Albrecht said.

The teenager’s mother, who took a picture at the Kreps Middle School, said her daughter was suspended for not changing into something else — a violation, she said, of her First Amendment rights.

“The Indian kids get to wear turbans. The Jewish children can wear yarmulkes. That’s their birth right, their heritage. It’s my daughter’s heritage,” said Jane West, Albrecht’s mother.

An assistant superintendent said Albrecht was not suspended for the sweatshirt but for a confidentiality policy they can’t discuss.

“When I got the suspension slip it said she was disrespectful when asked to remove her sweatshirt,” West said.

And a divided USA loses WWII... and you’d be speaking Japanese now.

It's more likely that we'd have simply been assigned different landing beaches for the Normandy Invasion.

We’ve been at war with Mexico, Britain, Germany, France (undeclared), Soviet Russia (cold), and other countries, yet those flags are everywhere.

The Stars and Stripes flew over slavery and bigotry for 80 years before the Rebel Flag was ever conceived. Should we get rid of that too?

Or why don’t we just get rid of any kind of icon that means anything to anyone. You’d probably be happy with white flags flying everywhere.

But I still get your point; the vanquished can’t fly their flag in the US.

That does explain why those high school boys in California weren't allowed to wear the American flag.

Charles Martel...hmmm...now there is a name that would be very offensive to many high school students...not just in Dearborn, Michigan...but sadly in Nashville, Tennessee too. The Mohammedan invastion is here and now and many thousands more are on the way.

I’ll stand corrected- my original point was that the defeated Mexicans have no problem flying their flag here.

You’re a hoot. Good luck my FRiend.

Don’t rely on the northern industrial base. It’s decayed, if you haven’t been to Buffalo or Allentown lately.

Guess where the remaining manufacturing jobs are: (Hint- non-union, open shop states)

Maybe the Feds will help your cause.

Is this some radically different from Mexican flags' embrace by some other schools?

The answer is to ban logos and slogans. Either adhere to a strict dress code or switch to uniforms. It's what many private schools do.

Apparently you are only allowed to wear the Mexican or rainbow flags these days because those are not disruptive or controversial at all.

An eon ago I received a scholarship, to attend UC Berkeley, from the good old ladies from the Daughters of the Confederacy. I think I have 6 great (times n) grandfathers that fought with the Confederate States of America. I've always wanted to purchase the Flag, but out here in the SF Bay Area, they wouldn't get the meaning of it, nor the historical background (nor the issue of State's rights).
So with the Stars and Stripes I just include some of the flags from the Revolutionary War (probably offends some Brits, or Tories, some where ...).

Another federal court just recently said the schools can ban US flags during Cinco Da Mayo while Hispanic kids can still wear Mexican flag shirts.

If one in one hundred high schools students knows who CM is, I'll be quite surprised.

Just as a hypothetical, should students of German ancestry be allowed to wear swastika armbands?

"An assistant superintendent said Albrecht was not suspended for the sweatshirt but for a confidentiality policy they can’t discuss."

So he asked her to take her clothes off, and she would not keep it a secret?

When your side loses a war... you don’t get to fly your flag any more.

I agree. This girl lives in New Jersey but transferred from the South (she should have stayed in the South where this type of behavior is applauded.). Anyway, I think that the school needs to put out a list of items not appropriate to wear to school at the beginning of the year. That would take care of a lot of kids trying to get away with whatever they want. The other option is to have the kids wear uniforms. Catholic schools never have these stupid problems.

When the South lost it was a loss for all of us who are fighting the all-powerful nanny state

How ironic.

Actually, the "confederacy" wasn't even a confederacy. Their constitution, cribbed from ours almost verbatim, created a consolidated republic just as faulty as ours.

Had they created an actual confederacy, I might sympathize with the slavers, but the Constitution they created proves that their politicians were interested in one thing only--and it wasn't LIBERTY:

That is why the South has been flying that flag since the Civil War....it is called free speech.
