The Newt Gingrich surge: Can it last?
CBS ^ | 111511 | John Dickerson, Brian Montopoli

Posted on 11/15/2011 1:06:25 AM PST by Fred

Newt Gingrich is having his moment. After a disastrous campaign rollout, a new CNN/ORC international poll shows Gingrich in a statistical tie with Mitt Romney atop a survey of which presidential candidate Republicans and Republican-leaning independents favor. (Romney was at 24 percent, Gingrich up to 22 percent - within the poll's margin of error. Herman Cain was third at 14 percent, down 11 points from October.) Gingrich was also competitive with Romney and Cain in CBS News' Friday poll and is atop a Public Policy Polling survey out Monday. (It should be noted that the PPP poll was taken using automated telephone interviews, which CBS News considers less reliable than personal interviews.)

Gingrich's roots in two early-voting states - Iowa and South Carolina - put him in a strong position to contend in those states. One new poll shows Gingrich tied with Cain atop the polls in Iowa, and an Insider Advantage survey taken November 8 showed Gingrich in second place in South Carolina, just seven points behind Cain.

Gingrich's recovery is undoubtedly tied to the fact that his rivals for the anti-Romney slot in the race have made something of a habit of self-destruction. But it's also notable that Gingrich has managed to turn his unfavorable ratings completely around among Republicans.

When Republicans (as opposed to Republicans and GOP-leaning independents) were asked in the new CNN/ORC poll their impression of Gingrich, 61 percent described it as favorable - the highest of any GOP candidate, and a ten point improvement from June. (Romney, at 55 percent, was the only rival to come close.) Just 21 percent had an unfavorable impression of Gingrich.

I say just let Newt have his week in the spotlight.

I have no doubts he too will be eviscerated shortly.

Considering that they agree on mandates for healthcare no I would not. I am not as easily entertained as the Newt crony capitalists are.

Cain is still in the lead on the latest Bloomberg poll. He supports the issues I support, I will stick with Cain.

At a time when America is so much in trouble - economically, ethically and morally - the best and brightest should be vying for the nomination and the Presidency. Yet, we have a cast of characters right out of central casting as to how bad the GOP is.

All of the candidates are promising to shake things up, set things right, etc. Yet, we KNOW they will do nothing, at best, or keep doing the same things over and over again. None of them appeal to the voters enough to be ahead by a wide margin. Their support runs a mile wide and an inch deep.

If I didn’t know better, I would think that they don’t want to be elected President. It would be too hard a job. So they go through this charade - RATs control the WH & the Senate and the GOP controls the House. Neither side accomplishes much and We, the people, get sc&%!ed - AGAIN.

If they can’t get Mitt...

I don’t know. I feel a bit softened up on the grinch...but the fact is, he has issues of his own and even if the MSM is having a good time with Cain right now, he HAS to know that if he does get nominated, after all the competition has been put to bed, the MSM will stop giggling and egging him on.

That’s when the gloves come off and they start ripping him to shreds. I am willing to bet that in every major bastion of Liberal power there is at least one “doomsday file” of every real, perceived or even remotely suspected transgression that can even be insinuated to have a Newt connection — and they will use them all.

I do not believe he would be able to withstand that level of scrutiny and hostile attention.

Still with Cain, here.

***the Liberal press will single him out and target him for a smear campaign, just as they have with each Republican frontrunner to come along in the past twelve months.***

The liberal press needs only to check FR for ammunition against all of the GOP candidates. Where have you been????

The mainstream regular type Americans believe every headline they see. I was trying to make the point the other day that Cain had been set up and the person I was talking to was amazed saying “wow if it isn’t true and Cain is being set up now that would be interesting!” Its like he could never think of this on his own and also he had not seen any media headlines saying “Cain set up by 0bama.”

“If Newt gets the nomination, his baggage will sink him and it’ll be another 4 years of the Zer0. “

Scare/smear tactics. Newt has been vetted already. We know what's coming. Newt knows what's coming. He is prepared to explain any and all smears sent his way. I can hear Newt now “..... do you want to talk about my marriages or about real solutions to our nations problems?” “I promise if elected president, I will NEVER sit on another couch with Nancy Pelosi” laughter erupts.

If you want an intelligent, well informed answer to questions about Libya, ask Newt next time. It's called EXPERIENCE!

I can't take the time to list all of Obama’s baggage. In the war of baggage, Obama LOSES big time.

Same here. I plan to stay with Herman to the bitter end.

So, a Marxist, a foreigner, and a Muslim walk up to the bar. The bartender asks, “what can I get you, Mr President?”

I believe when Newt’s factual moral compass and politics are revealed Herman Cain will see another bump in his numbers.

Any conservative who backs Newt is an utter fool. Just take 2 hours and watch clips such as this one, from only 4 years ago, wherein Newt agrees 100% with John Kerry on Global Warming, and calls for "urgent" government action to reduce carbon emissions - even scolding conservatives for their knee-jerk responses to bigger government, demanding instead a "new, 'Green Conservatism'":

Newt Gingrich "The Evidence is Sufficient" on Global Warming

Newt now sings a different tune. He is a fraud. There are dozens of such clips. Read the Pied Piper. Conservatives who follow Newt are no different from those mesmerized children. This gasbag will say ANYTHING to win. He is a megalomaniac. You don't give such men great power.

Newt would make a good Vice President, but I wouldn’t want him making any decisions, only carrying out the decisions of others.

I predict they will hold off on the significant attacks on Gingrich until after Thanksgiving.

They do not want to deflate him prematurely while he is on the rise.

Besides, Cain is not down far enough yet.

They gave Cain a few weeks as the frontrunner before they launched their smears.

It will be indefensible smears that will hit Gingrich.....things he will be unable to prove he did not do, events that he will be unable to prove did not happen.

Oh, Obama’s favorite tactic......get their hands on Newt’s divorce filings and look for the dirt his ex-wives dished on him and release those to the public.

That is how Obama won his Senate seat. That is the Chicago way.

Can Perry recover too? i wouldn't know who to support at this point.

Living in Maryland, the land of the demonRATs, it must be tough to think in an analytic manner.

Any other them will be better than obummer.

That was fast. I was just writing on another thread this morning that once the reality of Newt sets in, people will start wondering if they can give Perry another try.

Cain is done. He has had his 15 minutes and I believe

That is your opinion, and because "you believe" your start you piece from a false premise.

Try listing facts, not "your beliefs" BTW, you forgot to tell us your opinion of Creationism.
