OAKLAND -- Occupy Oakland protesters are planning a rally today in support of a veteran East Bay activist who faces possible deportation after being arrested during Monday's police sweep of the movement's encampment outside City Hall.
Records show that 36-year-old Francisco "Pancho" Ramos Stierle of Oakland is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin because of a federal immigration hold.

Alameda County sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson, a spokesman for the jail, said his agency had no control over federal immigration holds. "We don't make that decision," he said.
Federal immigration officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Stierle describes himself online as a human rights activist who came to the United States to study astrophysics at UC Berkeley but dropped out over his opposition to nuclear weapons development. It was not immediately known which country he emigrated from or when he arrived here.

I got a Benjamin Franklin sez the only time he ever got near Berkley was when he cruised for stoopid liberal chicks. He “came to America to study astrophysics at Berkley” in the same sense that John Forbes (”Walter Mitty”) Kerry spent Christmas Eve in Cambodia.

So this guy supposedly went to Berkeley to study Astrophysics, but left out of opposition to Nuclear Weapons development. First of all, I assume a Ph.D. student would know what century we are in. Second, who does he think runs Lawrence Livermore National Lab? Third, no one just “drops out” of a grad school program. In most cases, if you can’t hack the coursework or research, you can do enough to get a “courtesy Master’s” and get a job somewhere.
In short, he might have walked past Berkeley once...
