Sandusky's Creepy Costas Interview

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Sandusky did an interview, Penn State coach did an interview with Bob Costas on Rock Center last night. I'm trying to figure out why this lawyer would let this guy do this. And the lawyer said, "Well, you know, we've talked to some of these kids. A number of these kids are coming forward saying nothing like this ever happened." But the questions that Sandusky answers, "Are you a pedophile?" (paraphrasing) "No, but... yeah, well, maybe I shouldn't-a showered with the boys. I did touch 'em on the legs but it wasn't sexual, none of that, all this was false." (interruption) What? Does it remind me of anything? Oh. Oh. No, frankly I had not thought of Michael Jackson in this context, but you have a point. They asked Michael Jackson about kids sleeping over in the bed but I didn't touch them. The kid was right next to me in the bed but I just wanted to give them a nice home, good night's sleep.

Sandusky said, (paraphrasing) "Yeah, we turned the showers on, goofing around in there and towel popping and stuff. I touched 'em on the legs but, no, there was nothing sexual. I had it to do over again I wouldn't have taken showers with them." And Costas, "That's it?" "Yeah, that's it. All these charges are false, and I can't wait for my lawyer to go out and find the evidence and prove my innocence here." The only thing I can think of to do this is if you think you want to have a shot at influencing potential jurors who might appear, might be impaneled down the road in some criminal or civil case. Very odd. Because the guy did not help himself at all. He comes off as just yucky and slimy throughout the whole interview.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Here's Sandusky with Bob Costas. We're at 16, 17, and 18. This is last night on Rock Center. So Costas says, "Mr. Sandusky, it's a 40-count indictment. The grand jury report contains specific detail. There are multiple accusers, multiple eyewitnesses to various aspects of the abuse. A reasonable person says, 'Where there's this much smoke, there must be plenty of fire?' What do you say?"

SANDUSKY: I say that I am innocent of those charges.

COSTAS: Innocent? Completely innocent and falsely accused in every aspect?

SANDUSKY: Well, I could say that, you know, I have done some of those things. I have horsed around with kids. I -- I have showered after workouts. I -- I have hugged them and I've... I have touched their leg. Without intent of sexual contact.

RUSH: So, "I have showered with them," and "I have touched their leg. Without intent of sexual contact." Costas says, "Well, what are you willing to concede that you've done that was wrong and you wish that you had not done it?"

SANDUSKY: Well, in retrospect, I... you know, shouldn't have showered with those kids; and, so --

COSTAS: That's it?

SANDUSKY: Yeah, well... That's -- that's what hits me the most.

COSTAS: Are you a pedophile?

SANDUSKY: No.

COSTAS: Are you sexually attracted to young buys, to underage boys?

SANDUSKY: Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?

COSTAS: Yes.

SANDUSKY: Sexually attracted? You know, I -- I enjoy young people. I love to be around them. But, no, I'm not sexually attracted to young boys.

RUSH: Why would a lawyer let the guy go out and do this? That's just incredible. Why would the lawyer let the guy go on a show? I don't know. One more Costas: "How could somebody think they saw something as extreme and shocking as that when it hadn't occurred? What would possibly be their motivation to fabricate it?"

SANDUSKY: You'd have to ask them.

COSTAS: It seems that if all of these accusations are false, you are the unluckiest and most persecuted man that any of us has ever heard about.

SANDUSKY: (chuckles) I don't know what you want me to say. I don't think that these have been the best days of my life.

RUSH: Jerry Sandusky, Penn State, denying it all -- well, not denying it all. He's denying all the sex stuff. He's not denying showering and touching their legs and "horsing around" after workouts, but he's denying all the sexual contact. He hasn't done it.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Holy cow, folks, this is from The Daily, which is an iPad news publication of the News Corporation. The defense attorney for Sandusky impregnated a teenager and later married her. "According to documents filed with Centre County Courthouse, Amendola served as the attorney for," a woman, "Sept. 3, 1996, just weeks before her 17th birthday." And married her. This is very, very weird.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Lance in Gulf Breezes, Florida. Welcome, sir, to the EIB Network. I'm glad you waited. I really am. Hello.

CALLER: Hey thanks, Rush. How are you doing?

RUSH: Excellent, sir, thanks.

CALLER: You know, I agree with you about Cain and all that, but let me tell you why I called. I want to take you back to the Penn State issue, sexual predator issue, Sandusky.

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: Just so you know where I'm coming from on this, in my opinion sexual predators of children are like the ultimate scumbags, okay?

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: They're the worst. But Sandusky's interview with Costas where he talked about, you know, "I was in the shower with some, we horsed around a bit, it was no big deal," and Costas didn't call him on it, but he acted like this stuff was normal, totally normal. Listen, I played sports from when I was a little kid all the way up and through my first year of college. Never one time, not one single time did a coach get naked with us in the shower, not once did he come in and try to horse around in the shower, ever. And if one had, I think my teammates and I, we woulda all been like, "Wow, this is really weird. This is embarrassing." I know we would have, because when you're that age, when you're a teenager, you're a young kid, you're going through various stages of development, just --

RUSH: You're hoping a cheerleader walks in, not the coach.

CALLER: Well, yeah. (laughing) That's true. When you're that age --

RUSH: Yes.

CALLER: -- your testosterone is going nuts, your hormones. But that's true. But you know, to have a coach walk in, even to look in the door as you're taking -- it was bad enough taking a shower with my teammates, 'cause everybody's self-conscious.

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: You got some guys who have developed and look like at 15 like they're 35, and some of them look like they're ten.

RUSH: Yep.

CALLER: So you got all these levels of development, and it's weird being in there in the first place, to have a coach walk in and start fooling around and horsing around and whatever the hell he did? That's just crazy. It's bizarre, it's outrageous. And for him to act like that's just normal, I can't believe it.

RUSH: Well, he did say that if he had it to do over again, he wouldn't have done that. He wouldn't have --

CALLER: Well, yeah --

RUSH: He wouldn't have done the showers.

CALLER: Because he's gotten caught. That's why he says that.

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: I mean that's the way people are, "Oh, yeah, I wouldn't do it again if I had a choice," but what he's leaving out, "Oh, yeah, I forgot, I got caught."

RUSH: It's really curious that he would do the interview. It's curious that his lawyer would let him do the interview.

CALLER: Yeah.

RUSH: Then after that decision is made and they're doing the interview, the way he answered these questions, it just makes it slimier. There was nothing helpful here.

CALLER: Well, yeah, if nobody had come forward and there were no witnesses outside of the kid to this, like the other coach, the assistant coach, if there were no witnesses and none of the kids came forward you'd be hard-pressed to prove any of this, of course, but now it's out there and for him to go on and act like this is normal, it's like, you know, the thing with -- like you brought up before about Michael Jackson sleeping with kids. I don't know, maybe they had their pajamas on, maybe that's what made that okay, I don't know, but these kids are in the shower and they're all naked and he's naked, and it's just like --

RUSH: Well, don't forget now, Michael Jackson was acquitted.

CALLER: I know. That's why I say maybe they had their pajamas on or something. (laughing) You know, not to minimize it.

RUSH: No, that's not why Michael Jackson was acquitted. Michael Jackson was acquitted because the prosecution went too far in what they were alleging, and the jury said we don't see any evidence of that. The jury went right by the law. A lot of times prosecutors overreach. I'm not saying there's a connection here to this. We don't know how this case is gonna be prosecuted. I'm just reminding you Jackson was acquitted. I predicted he'd be acquitted because of the way the prosecutors were dealing -- predicted he'd be acquitted because nothing to do with whether he did it with the kids or not because of what the prosecutors were attempting to get a conviction on, they hadn't laid the groundwork for that and so he's acquitted, and everybody was outraged over it because everybody knows he did it but the jury said, "I'm sorry, that's not what they asked us to decide in the end."

And of course the O.J. jury just decided to do jury nullification, "To hell with it, I don't care, we're gonna show you what it feels like to have somebody guilty walk out of it. We're just gonna show you. We've been dying to show you for 200 years, so here you go." So that was the O.J. jury. The Michael Jackson jury is all different. This, I heard it said earlier today that maybe the Sandusky legal team is attempting here their one shot at the jury pool. Because if he doesn't do any interviews, what chance does he have of explaining his side of this to potential jurors other than before they get to court? (interruption) I think they did muff it, if that's the plan. Very, very few defense lawyers let their clients talk.

One of the most famous defense clients that jabbered all over the place was Blago, and look what that got him. Blagojevich couldn't be silenced no matter what his defense lawyers want. Anyway, Lance I appreciate the call. He's exactly right, by the way. In high school I was the manager for the varsity basketball team, and I played football for one year as a sophomore in high school. He's exactly right. The last place you ever saw any of the coaches was in the showers. You never saw the coaches undressed. Never. It never, ever happened. And had it happened, he's right, old Lance, it would have been the oddest, strangest thing. Somebody woulda told their parents about it, and that would have been the end of the coach. Now, I'm talking 1967, obviously, not now. We don't know what those kids said to their parents. That's all to come out later.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: We have Georgia next from Scotland, Maryland, on the Excellence in Broadcasting Network. Georgia, hi. Great to have you here.

CALLER: Oh, it's a pleasure to be speaking with you, Rush.

RUSH: Thank you very much.

CALLER: I'm just wondering why the board of trustees hasn't been questioned in all this. Now, what policies did they have in place to protect the children at Penn State?

RUSH: Okay, here's the policies. What happened at Penn State was if things like this were spotted, the people spotting it were supposed tell superiors within the administration, so this McQueary was supposed to tell his superior, which would have been Paterno. He went and told his dad. His dad said you gotta tell Paterno. Somebody told Paterno. Paterno was then supposed to report it to superiors, which he did. I don't know who those superiors are. At some point it was supposed to get up to the board of trustees. Also in a situation like this, the law is that this kind of infraction, the police need to be called immediately and they weren't. Although there are conflicting stories on this.

There are some people alleging that Paterno did call the cops but it hasn't been reported and he's curious as to why. It's a mishmash out there. But it looks like your question's a good one because this goes back to the nineties. It was as recent as 2002, 2006, this coach was still bringing recruits into the football building, and he had that Sandusky dessert that was on sale at the ice cream shop. It looks like a whole lot of people had some idea what was going on and just chose to ignore it because they didn't want to do anything that might harm the football program and the money and so forth. That's what it looks like, doesn't it?

CALLER: Yes.

RUSH: But I can't answer why the board of trustees is off the hook. I think everybody is now in a CYA mode. That's why what you see happening now is happening, people getting canned, people being fired, administrative leave, any number of things, because now, with the attorney general looking into this at the state level and who knows whatever civil and criminal action is yet to be forthcoming, everybody's now in CYA mode, which is covering themselves up and making it look like they did everything they were supposed to do when, but it's gonna be tough because Sandusky, up until just a few years ago was still prowling the place. Anything else?

CALLER: No. Thank you, Rush. That was all I wanted to contribute today.

RUSH: Wait. You obviously have some thoughts about this yourself 'cause nobody's asked about the board of trustees. You're the first that's brought that aspect of it up.

CALLER: Well, I just find it, you know, curious why they would shine the spotlight on Mr. Paterno, who, you know, obviously there was a report made, the police were involved, prosecutors were involved, one of the prosecutors is missing. That in and of itself shows that something had been done.

RUSH: That is weird. This prosecutor's been missing since 2005 and nobody's talking much about that. But that's intriguing to me.

CALLER: Yeah. And that's why I wondered, why hasn't any -- you know, I feel that the board of trustees may have been shining the spotlight on Mr. Paterno to take the light off of themselves.

RUSH: Well, it looks that way. It looks like a lot of people are trying to shine the light everywhere but on themselves. So this probably is gonna get much worse, too, before it gets better. If there were other victims, they'll be forthcoming. There are gonna be fake alleged victims. There are gonna be all kinds of people trying to get in on the money that people are gonna see possibly to be made here. This is not gonna go away, and all day long I've been watching, PMSNBC's practically running excerpts of the Bob Costas interview on NBC last night in a repetitive loop, in a continual loop, going over and over and over again. It's almost as though they know that Sandusky's a Republican. I don't know what he is, I'm just guessing that MSNBC's hoping and praying that he is and they hope to make some political connection to this. You know they're thinking that way, and if it turns out Sandusky's a Democrat we'll never find out, pure and simple.

This guy was one of the absolute worst and most unconvincing liars I've seen in all my days.

I can't imagine any rational person believing a word of what he said. And I can't believe this guy's lawyer actually allowed the creep to do the interview!

Some say a mind is a terrible thing to waste, however, it appears that for Jerry Sandusky, his view is a Pen!s is a terrible thing to waste.

SHAME...SHAME!!

I heard this caller, Lance from Florida, on Rush today (I am in and out of my car all day and miss things but I did hear that).

I'm not a guy and didn't play sports so I don't know but what he says about coaches not being in the shower area and not horsing around with the players sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Any guys out there who participated in sports want to comment?

I do have two sons who played some sports but haven't had a chance to ask them. It never occurred to me to ask about what happened in the locker room, in the showers. I can't say, though, that I ever saw them or any of their teammates having the type of relationship with any coach which would lead to a lot of physical "horsing around." It seems disrespectful to me.

A lot of lawyers are questioning that. I think he was nuts to do it.

According to what I found on the internet the guy is small town criminal defense lawyer in solo practice doing everything from DUI's to felonies. Judging from letting his client do a press interview I'd say he's way out of his depth.

I don't follow this story except that as a die hard Buckeye fan, I might find some pleasure in anything negatively affecting Penn State football recruiting.

That having been said, public bathhouses at lakes, beaches and parks are areas where adults and minors can be found together naked in the shower. When I was in the service, the gyms on base had no age restriction in the showers that I can recall either.

So, on the surface, this guy being naked in the shower with minors may be poor judgement but by itself isn't enough to send him up to the big house.

I really don’t like the way Sandusky is being characterized as “creepy” as if all he did was leer at a young boy or touch him inappropriately. Sandusky is a horrible criminal if he did what is alleged. You don’t call John Wayne Gacy “creepy”, you don’t call OJ Simpson “creepy”, you don’t call a rapist “creepy” either and you certainly don’t call a child rapist creepy. There is way too much sanitizing of what Sandusky did. “Inappropriate conduct” — this was rape (allegedly). Not “inappropriate” or “creepy.”

If someone said this in front of me I would kill them on the spot with whatever deadly object I could readily grab ahold of.

From the article: I'm trying to figure out why this lawyer would let this guy do this.

It's simple. Sandusky's "tales" are legion within the Penn state. They've gone viral. What potential juror in PA hasn't already heard about a lot of this? Where can he hope to find ONE who would acquit him...otherwise impossible unless he steps up now to try to create just "one" doubtful juror?

Good catch.

"Creepy" is the unknown reputation of a taco-muncher on a cell phone service commercial. "Criminal" and habitual sex offender and child rapist is the face of Penn State.

He hasn't provoked a nation by being "creepy" and wandering about deserted shower stalls at night.

Umm, Gacy and Sandusky are creepty. It starts with creepy and it ends with malevolently evil. But yes, those freaks, with their goofy grins and their needy whining and shameless begging were certainly creepy.

Exactly.

This is a question to which there is but one correct answer. And that answer is composed with but one word: “No.”

OJ got off because blacks typically don’t care that he killed a white woman. Unless this guy gets a jury full of NAMBLA members he is toast.

ALL: note these two excerpts from a couple of articles:

#1

Sandusky, 67, broke his silence in a telephone interview Monday night with NBC's Bob Costas and his oddly worded denials raised eyebrows. t one point Costas asked the retired coach, charged with 40 counts of child sexual abuse, if he fits "the classic MO of many pedophiles" by gaining the trust of many young people but not abusing all of them. "Well, you might think that. I don't know," Sandusky said, and then laughed, according to a transcript from the interview. "I didn't go around seeking out EVERY young person for sexual needs that I've helped. There are MANY that I didn't have -- I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways."
Source: ABCNews

Note the qualifications he gave there...

#2 Source: Sandusky interview sheds light on mindset

The voice over the phone sounded as weak and pathetic as the explanations and excuses it was trying to spread. ..Costas: Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to under age boys?
Sandusky: Am I sexually attracted to underage boys? (There was a nearly two-second pause)
Sandusky: Sexually attracted, no, I, I enjoy young people. I, I love to be around them. I, I, but no I’m not sexually attracted to young boys.

Two-second pause AFTER repeating the question so he could ponder how he would respond. It took him then 5 seconds to begin an answer and at least 6 seconds before the word "no" came out!

Excerpt cont'd:

In this very interview, even after this national firestorm, Sandusky continued to argue minor points and paint himself as confused about right and wrong. Not that he was believable. If Sandusky truly thought at the time this was even remotely appropriate, why did he continually wait until the Penn State locker room was empty to shower with the boys? If there was nothing wrong, then why not try it in front of everyone? Which brings up the second jolting passage, where Sandusky offers up an explanation for his relationship with children that sounded like something from Michael Jackson.

It is simply impossible to imagine how a grown man, when asked if he was sexually attracted to young boys, would hesitate for even a second before screaming “no.”

To try to explain it with, “I enjoy young people” and “I love to be around them,” falls to some perverse sense of entitlement, suggesting he thought he deserves those relationships no matter what everyone else is suggesting. It’s not as if Sandusky wasn’t capable of strong answers when it came to other questions. While he wasn’t emphatic in denying his sexual attractions to boys, he was when declaring that Paterno never once asked him about his behavior...
