Gingrich: ‘I’m a genuine, intellectual conservative’ (gives his ideas on illegals and the border)
American Independent ^ | November 16, 2011 | Douglas Burns

CARROLL — As he surged to the top of two national polls Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich spent nearly three hours at the Santa Maria Winery in Carroll on Monday, speaking with voters, taking questions, signing books and screening a movie he co-developed celebrating Pope John Paul II.

Gingrich also conducted a 10-minute interview with The Carroll Daily Times Herald and La Prensa, an Iowa Spanish-language newspaper, before going on air nationally with Fox News’ Sean Hannity from a makeshift, temporary studio...

....La Prensa asked Gingrich’s reaction to an often-repeated line from Cain about constructing a border fence with Mexico so that it can electrocute immigrants, and possibly even snare them in an associated moat stocked with alligators.

“It was a bad idea,” Gingrich said.

He added, “I hope he was joking. I’d like to think he was joking.”

Gingrich then turned to his own immigration plans, calling for control of the border in a way that is “human and practical.”

“I’m working on an immigration program which is firm but at the same time has a human aspect to it that I think most Hispanic Americans would appreciate,” Gingrich said.

Earlier, in a question-and-answer session with voters in the winery, Gingrich said he wanted to impose severe penalties for employers who hired undocumented workers. Moreover, he put forward a plan modeled on the Selective Service System used by the military in World War II in which local committees of citizens could help determine the immigration status of a city’s illegal residents based on factors like how long they’ve lived in the area, family roots and contributions socially and in business.

Gingrich said rhetoric about deporting all illegal immigrants isn’t realistic.

“I think it’s very unlikely the American people are going to break up families,” Gingrich said...

Newt seems a bit confused.

1989: Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA) co-sponsors the ambitious Global Warming Prevention Act (H.R. 1078), which finds that “the Earth’s atmosphere is being changed at an unprecedented rate by pollutants resulting from human activities, inefficient and wasteful fossil fuel use, and the effects of rapid population growth in many regions,” that “global warming imperils human health and well-being” and calls for policies “to reduce world emissions of carbon dioxide by at least 20 percent from 1988 levels by 2000.” The legislation recognizes that global warming is a “major threat to political stability, international security, and economic prosperity.” [H.R. 1078, 2/22/1989]

1992: Gingrich calls the environmental proposals in Al Gore’s book Earth in Balance “devastatingly threatening to most American pocketbooks and jobs.” [National Journal, 9/5/92]

1996: At a speech for the Detroit Economic Club, Gingrich mocks “Al Gore’s global warming,” citing “the largest snowstorm in New York City’s history”: “We were in the middle of budget negotiations; the football games were coming up and we noticed on the weather channel that an early symptom of Al Gore’s global warming was coming to the East Coast. And it does make you wonder sometimes, doesn’t it, how theoretical statisticians in the middle of the largest snowstorm in New York City’s history could stand there and say, ‘I don’t care what it’s doing. It’s going to get very hot soon.’” [FDCH Political Transcripts, 1/16/96]

1997: As Speaker of the House, Gingrich co-sponsors H. Con. Res. 151, which notes carbon dioxide is a “major greenhouse gas” that comes from “products whose manufacture consumes fossil fuels” and calls on the United States to “manage its public domain national forests to maximize the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.” [H. Con. Res. 151, 9/10/1997]

2007: Gingrich calls for a cap-and-trade system with tax incentives for clean energy. “I think if you have mandatory carbon caps combined with a trading system, much like we did with sulfur, and if you have a tax-incentive program for investing in the solutions, that there’s a package there that’s very, very good. And frankly, it’s something I would strongly support.” [Frontline, 2/15/07]

February 15, 2007: “I think if you have mandatory carbon caps combined with a trading system, much like we did with sulfur, and if you have a tax-incentive program for investing in the solutions, that there’s a package there that’s very, very good. And frankly, it’s something I would strongly support.” [Frontline, 2/15/07]

In a debate on climate policy with Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), Gingrich says “the evidence is sufficient that we should move towards the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon-loading of the atmosphere,” and that we should “do it urgently.” [ThinkProgress, 4/10/07]

In a Washington Post chat, Gingrich rejects a cap-and-trade system, saying it “would lead to corruption, political favoritism, and would have a huge impact on the economy.” He says he supports “tax credits for dramatically reducing carbon emissions.” [Washington Post, 4/17/08]

2008: In an advertisement made for Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, Gingrich sat with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and said that “we do agree our country must take action to address climate change.” [We Campaign, 4/18/08]

“I don’t think that we have conclusive proof of global warming. And I don’t think we have conclusive proof that humans are at the center of it.” [Newt.org, 4/22/08]

April 4, 2009: “And now, in 2009, instead of making energy cheaper—which would help create jobs and save Americans money—President Obama wants to impose a cap-and-trade regime. Such a plan would have the effect of an across-the-board energy tax on every American. That will make our artificial energy crisis even worse—and raising taxes during a deep economic recession will only accelerate American job losses.” [Newsweek, 4/4/09]

Rick Perry has said you are a heartless person if you do not want to let illegals have a free education and give them credits to go to college.

No. The Texas legislature voted almost unanimously to let the children brought into the U.S. illegally, who had spent at least 3 years in Texas schools and graduated, to pay instate tuition. Gov. Perry signed that 2001 bill. It is a state decision (many states have it and many more have it on their radar because it is the trade-off they have to make because the Feds refuse to SEAL the border). They must apply for citizenship. Most of the small number who go on to college attend local community colleges.

When he said he couldn’t recall his 3rd dept he wanted to disband...and then he recalled it a long time later...it’s obvious someone else wrote that down for him. If he truly wanted to disband it, and it was truly HIS idea, he would of recalled it on the spot. He is another telepormpter candidate.

Texas is an energy state. Gov. Rick Perry has been battling the EPA and the Energy Dept for over a decade. As he said, "oops." It happens to everyone. Even you.

“Bill Clinton came to Rick Perry’s defense Monday over a law the Texas governor signed granting in-state college tuition to children of illegal immigrants.” (headline from CNN on 11/7/11)

Enough said

What the Hell is an "intellectual conservative"?

What I take from that comment is, Newt sees himself as an elite.

Perhaps you missed the debate where Perry said out loud that those who do not want children of illegals to go to college at in-state rates are “heartless”. It did cause a furestorm ( and a dramatic drop in his polling numbers)

Perry should not give ANYTHING TO ILLEGALS. He should find them and send them back. Perry should of not said we were heartless in a Presidential debate if he is one who REALLY wants to seal the border. Does he have no mind of his own?

It was an 'OOPS'...only because he knew he was 'had'. It wasn't his idea otherwise he would of been able to recognize it when he HEARD It from someone else..... The man is an embarrassment and a clown.

Until the border is SEALED, the cartels are killed off and NO amnesty is understood — there is nothing else to discuss.

Wow. You must be exhausted. I sure hate it when politicians disappoint me and change their stand on issues over 20 years.

Who should I vote for? Who won't disappoint me and make me sad?

Gingrich said rhetoric about deporting all illegal immigrants isn’t realistic.

Newt himself has called that the fallacy of the extreme choice. I don't know of a whole lot of folks on the anti-illegal side who suggest that is practical. What is practical is to make it more and more difficult to live here as in illegal. He's right about big penalties for hiring illegals (although you need an AG who will enforce the laws). The laws in AZ and AL are a good example. I would pass a law that any employer who has illegals working for them would have a 10K fine per illegal for the first offense, and have their business seized on the second offense. Ditto landlords who rent to illegals. Employers who use everify would be exempt if the illegal was approved. Colleges should have to use everify as well, or lose all Federal funding. Finally, eliminate the "day labor" exemption for contractors, and require all day labor to be hired through agencies that will be required to do everify checks.

Laws like that would lead to the majority of illegals self deporting.

In June 2011 Debate Newt Gingrich called Americans Heartless for deporting 20 million illegals.

“GINGRICH: No, but let me say this, John. No serious citizen who’s concerned about solving this problem should get trapped into a yes/no answer in which you’re either for totally selling out protecting America or you’re for totally kicking out 20 million people in a heartless way. There are — there are humane, practical steps to solve this problem, if we can get the politicians and the news media to just deal with it honestly.”
