Columbus Dispatch ^ | 11/16/2011 | Jim Phillips

A portion of a major natural gas pipeline apparently ruptured and exploded this morning in rural Morgan County, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air and setting five buildings ablaze.

The explosion in a Tennessee Gas pipeline along Taylor Road near the Athens-Morgan county line was reported to authorities about 8:45 a.m.

The blast caused several fires along the route of the 25-inch high-pressure pipeline. The explosion and subsequent fires destroyed two occupied houses, one unoccupied house and a barn, said Shane Cartmill, spokesman for the state fire marshal's office. Another barn received fire damage.

Oh yes? I was also told that AEP had outages in E Ohio last night. For several hours.

“How about that.” (From “The Unit”)

Are these pipelines for feeding US gas needs and making us energy independent, or are they feeding ports where the gas is liquefied and shipped to China? I’d like to know because I am whole hog into supporting the USA energy independence, but not just for supporting the price of gas, China, and global companies. Anyone know?

If you don’t impede the supply of LNG to whoever is willing to pay the most for it, pretty soon you get LNG at market prices.

I don’t know, but I am assuming it’s a major trunk line for nat gas from Tenn. on up thru the NE. Remember, though, that this area is all tied up in oil shale, nat gas deposits and coal. Serious, serious coal. The person that called me about this explosion told me about someone we know who worked the pipeline years ago. This is a very big deal.

The way I heard tell, fire and emergency personnel to combat the explosion were 45 minutes away. Now that’s out there. Sounds beautiful.

I rather doubt that TGP is getting a gas supply in New England and shipping it to Texas. "Coals to Newcastle" and all that.

My dad was an inspector during the installation of a large natural gas pipeline back in the 60’s.
I went with him on several occasions.
He made me stay in the truck.

That is correct. The pipeline actually has origination points on the Gulf coast in Texas and Louisiana and it ends in Eastern Massachusetts, about 25 miles north of Boston. It is large...36" in diameter and old, built in 1943. This is the second time in nine months there has been a major explosion; the earlier one was also in Ohio, about 100 miles north of today's.

Factual truism: You’ll never see one of these 25” gas lines in the back yard of a Congress critter of either Party. But if one of their donor buddies wants it in yours, they’ll be happy to use the liberal definition of eminent domain for private profit and include more campaign donations with a smile.

Gas lines and other such things can have real life and death repercussions for those unfortunate enough to be stuck with them. Those that want to put them there need to pay a market based price and not use political influence.

Hmmmm. Ohio is key to 0bama, no? And it has Somalis up the yin yang. The unions just lied thru their teeth about the collective bargaining/merit pay issue. 250 gangs in Dayton. Cleveland is a dump. Youngstown worse. And all the Detroit support shops are gonesville.

Sounds like some place ripe for 0bama 2012 OWS Plan, Phase II.
