Ford Unleashes a 200 MPH Mustang
Fox News ^ | November 15, 201 | Staff

When Chevrolet unveiled the 580 hp 2012 Camaro ZL1 and its high-tech magnetically-adjustable suspension, ostensibly claiming the title of king of the pony cars, the folks from Ford were oddly unfazed.

“Don’t worry,” they said, “wait until you see what we have in the works.”

They weren’t kidding.

The 2013 Shelby GT500 will come packing a 650 hp supercharged engine that Ford says is the most powerful production V8 in the world. The 5.8-liter mill sends its 600 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber driveshaft.

I doubt that the aerodynamics *are* up to it. The ‘Vette will, and the Veyron and a few others, but they’re purpose-built. The Veyron will do 220, but it’ll need new tires when you’re done. Same for the ‘Vette. 650 hp is a lot, but not enough I think to really do 200. Pony cars were stoplight racers and weekend track machines, not supercars.

In 1969, I had my 350cc Honda Scrambler over 110 mph and then the front wheel started bouncing like a basketball. On the Mass. Pike in front of Fenway Park.

Same for the ‘Vette. 650 hp is a lot, but not enough

I have a 08 LS3 Vette, with a mere 436 hp. I hit 163 in the back straight at Talladega back in May, and it was still pulling hard, but I ran out of track. Smooth as silk! Another guy in our club with a Z06 hit 173, with plenty to spare. I am confident my car will do the claimed 185, and the current Z06 will come close to or exceed the 200 mph barrier. Of course, the Vette is a lot slicker than the Mustang or Camaro.

BTW, I get 28 mpg on the hwy at 70 mph. I have hit 30.4 mpg once, hwy speed at 62 mpg. And insurance is cheaper than my wife's Escalade!

Re: Ford Unleashes a 200 MPH Mustang

Back in the 1980's, one of my idiot cousins bought himself a multi-thousand dollar bass boat with a huge six cylinder outboard motor on it.

"This baby," he beamed, "will do one hundred-thirty miles an hours!"

"Not with me in it," I replied.

And, yes, he is still among the living... but only because his wife made him sell that boat after he took her on a high speed spin.

The bad news is Ole' Shel is to old and of lesser health to drive it. Rumor I heard was last time he was at Ford they took him for a ride in one and not at warp speed.

I also read a while back, their next gen V8's will be Eco-Boost adaptable, i.e the architecture will allow for the DI.

So the question begs, with their be a 2016-8 ( or when ever ) Shelby Twin Turbo DI Eco-Boost with these gobs of HP and better mileage to boot.....

Question please to a professional..........why does Ford insist on building hot cars, like the Mustang, with a straight rear axle instead of independent suspension?

You know, if people would take the time to read the article they would this question which has been asked over and over and over in this thread.....

Most important for daily drivers, Ford is for the first time on a Mustang offering an active suspension option with an electronically-adjustable Bilstein dampers that promise a smooth ride to the track and world class handling on it.

I brought a ‘52 TD back to life a number of years back, that was a fun car to drive! Topped out at about 65 mph, but man, it was fun. I’m content now with my two MGB’s. One is totally stock (’64) and the other one is fast (’65 w/ small block aluminum V8).

I took a look at the spec sheets before asking about the rear suspension......seems to be an enhanced straight rear axle, not independent rear suspension...........are you a Mustang owner? Some Mustang owners get real testy when other than glowing remarks are expressed...........

I have always liked Mustangs, especially the ones with Cobra upgrades...........and Cobras, well they are something special........

But, I stand by my question...........the Mustang and some other hot cars by Ford would be ridiculous if they had independent rear suspension.......

Former Mustang Owner. Got tired of the damn suspension beating the hell out of me in fact. LOL!

I did a buck-forty on a KZ1000 once. The road got real narrow.

At that speed, the bike seemed to zip from side to side about 6”...I slowed down immediately.

Yeah, you could probably shoehorn 650 HP under that handsome hood.
