If Halifax NC Students Skip School, Parents Could Face Jail
Education News ^ | November 16, 2011 | B.A. Birch

Posted on 11/17/2011 6:48:42 AM PST by wintertime

Chief District Court Judge Brenda Branch has ruled that Halifax County (NC) parents are going to be held accountable for their children’s school attendance — and that could mean jail if they are not deemed to have made an effort to promote school attendance, writes the Daily Herald.

The proposal is a collaborative effort between the Halifax County court system, three public school systems and county agencies that are looking to address truancy issues for students in the district.

It was announced this week at the Halifax County Community Child Protection Team meeting. Branch, along with District Attorney Melissa Pelfrey delivered the message as many heavy hitters in the Halifax County law and public education fields rallied behind the proposal.

“There was much confusion around who’s responsibility it was to handle truancy that some children were missing from 40 to 80 days from school without suffering any consequences,” said Arnethia Nicholson, chair of the team and Halifax County Department of Social Services employee.

The combined efforts of the school systems, Halifax County court system, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Social Services and The Community Child Protection Team resulted in the Tri-District Truancy Procedure, which could ultimately land a parent in front of a judge.

Thanks for your support, my FRiend, but I’m done with this thread.

There are some really great home school advocates here on Free Republic, and then there are those that give homeschoolers a really bad name. Unfortunately the latter group are the ones that have chosen to get into this thread.

You, my dear, are the one with the personal problem, not me.

I talk about fundamental issues. The above is specifically about me. Directed to me.

Personal Personal. There it is again. Tsk! Tsk!

So I am to take a government school defendet’s word about whether or not their local school would allow me to read the bible to their students?

Freepers.....Does this sound right to you? Freepers would your local school allow a citizen to come into their school to openly and flagrantly read the bible aloud to their students?

Gabz, claims that her district would, yet refuses to provide a link for us so that we could check it out. Ooooookay!

I am not calling you a liar. You might be confused, but I could call the district headquarters to clarify things.

Sorry, correction: you're on every one and all public school/homeschooling threads I've EVER looked at.

And I don't look at the vast majority of them. I'm comfortable with my deduction.

If you can’t show that your hated public school system does not turn out well rounded children what am I to think?

What was that crappy Catholic school you went to? It was in GA wasn't it?

So you moved to VA for good public schools? Where in VA are you? I wouldn't even live in N VA. much less send my children to school there.

But if your saying we should change states rather than accept the mediocre necessity of public education and the misery it's wrought, then you've missed the point so badly I'm starting to believe your crappy private school story.

I bet I could go in and read the Bible in the public schools here. Someone might complain afterward. I’m sure I could have done it in our elementary school in Virginia. I don’t think anyone would have complained there. (The “gifted” school is another story.)

You expect everyone to accept as truth what you post without question, yet expect everyone who disagrees with you to post proof of what they state.

You called me a liar. Own up to it.

You’re an idiot.

Go right ahead and call the mods on me - heck, I’ll do it for you. I’m sick of your crap. You blatantly lie about other FReepers yet expect everyone to accept every word you post as gospel truth.

I’m done with you, you have crossed the line.

I have done my level best to be civil with you, but civility is obviously not a word in your vocabulary, nor is it a word in the vocabulary of your minions.

You’re also a bitch.

LOL! Your “correction” is so idiotic as to not even be worth commenting upon

What is your problem with GA and VA - did you get hurt in a school in either place? If so I’m so sorry. I’ve never lived in GA, so I have no clue what goes on there.

I went to school in NYC from kindergarten through college and technical school. Oh, and the crappy Catholic school I attended, it makes the top 100 every year, and usually sits in the top 10. You got a problem with that?

You couldn’t pay me enough to live in northern Virginia, but even that is better than living in the bastion of liberalism I left called Delaware.

I don’t homeschool.

That puts you squarely in the contingent that gives homeschoolers a bad name.

My correction is that is you are on every homeschool/public ed thread that I look at and that's a stone cold fact.

Nice diversion though.

I'm sorry if I confused you with another poster, maybe Softballmom, who claimed the crappy Catholic school they attended, or were aware of, was in the metro ATL area. That's where I went to private Catholic school, so my interest in that would be obvious. If that wasn't you, THAT'S WHY I ASKED. Thanks for just answering the question.

Good luck with your public school thing. Hope your kids get all of the real world socialization they need.

I'd rather not have to help pay for it, but, whatever. You like public schools. You obviously like them enough to compel those who don't like them to pay for them. And you don't seem the least bit shy about it.

Good for you.

“I mean, ask yourself...would you rather have the kid out doing drugs, breaking into houses, impregnating their girlfriends or watching Jerry Springer...or sitting in school? “

Which is exactly what can happen when a single mom works two jobs with no father in the house. Does it make sense to jail her for her kid’s juvenile delinquency? Is that going to improve the family’s relationship?

Your correction tells me you look at very few homeschool/public ed threads and that is a stone cold fact, as I no longer frequent them as I did in the past.

Nice diversion, though.

Nice attempt at the dodge on the fact you have no idea what you are talking about and just throw out accusations wherever you choose.

My daughter does just fine in the public school she attends, she gets her real world socialization when she is out with her father and I. School is not the real world and she understands that.

You know nothing about me, and prove you have never paid attention to my comments on these threads with your asinine comment about paying for public schools.

We now have a second admitted liar on this thread.

Let me break this down as simply as I can for you, perhaps to accomodate for your sustandard NY Catholic education.

I oppose government creating education as an entitlement. When government intends to provide things as an entitlement, as with health care, housing, wages, retirement benefits, not only does it ultimately fail to provide those things affordably, but it destroys the free market for those who do not wish to participate. And that does not even begin to describe or acknowledge the moral hazard involved in removing the responsibility for providing such things from those who should provide it.

I understand expediency. I understand that you chose it.

You posting less and less in education threads would probably be a good thing.
