Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer, according to his son.

Scott Paterno said in a statement provided to The Associated Press by a family representative on Friday that the 84-year-old Joe Paterno is undergoing treatment and that "his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

"As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment," Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.

Scott Paterno said the diagnosis was made during a follow-up visit last weekend for a bronchial illness.

Earlier Friday, the Standard-Speaker newspaper of Hazleton, Pa., reported that Paterno had been seen Wednesday visiting the Mount Nittany Medical Center and was treated for an undisclosed ailment and released.

Speculation was swirling around his transferring ownership of the house to his wife last year for 1 dollar. Many said it was because he knew he was going to go to jail over the cover up. To me I thought it was just because he is old and was setting up a will. Very standard thing that married people do near the end of life. Apparently the will idea is the more plausible idea in light of this news.

I wonder if this is why he transferred the house to his wife’s name?

I’ve been rereading the PA state law on this and it looks like his criminal legal obligation actually did end with informing his superiors. His moral obligation is something different. I think he transferred his house so he would have a place to live after the civil suits start flying.

Exactly. He transfered the house in April, I bet that’s when this came to light, or health concerns became very pressing. I didn’t think he was trying to hide anything. It’s just so par for the course when you are 80 something.

Most Americans, when defining greatness, adhere to something as doofus as setting an all-time game win record (and even that, only because an insular community was complicit in a cover-up) ...

But for me, it's the moments of inaction, the times you didn't do what you could, and the times you truly did what you could do, when you knew it was the right thing to do, that define a man.

Yes. There is a doctrine in law called "fraudulent conveyance." If Paterno in fact did know that he was guilty of something that might result in a civil action against him, then any attempts he made to protect his assets, such as this transfer of the house to his wife, can be unwound by the courts and forfeited in a judgement against him.

Paterno had nothing to do with it, the paper reported his trip to the medical center after obviously trailing....like they usually do.

First he has to convince everyone that he did that, the fact that the queer was still on campus sort of puts that to a lie. And he was still hunting players.

I nominate this for post of the year. :)

It’s not an unwise thing for people to transfer assets when one spouse is getting nearer to the end. That way, it’s not tied up in probate and may not be subject to taxes. However, that advice varies from state to state and in “community property” states, may be completely moot.

I have had people say that it is better for the spouse to buy a life insurance policy because it is then not subject to probate. However, you have to be sure the spouse has no desire to kill you.
