In another of several interviews he has given this past week on the Iranian issue, Defense Minister Ehud Barak is hinting that in time is running out to stop Iran from achieving nuclear capability.
In an interview to CNNs Fareed Zakaria GPS, which will air on Sunday and of which an advanced transcript was released on Saturday, Barak says that Iran is less than a year away from becoming unstoppable in its goal to produce a nuclear weapon.
When asked by the host whether Israel is going to attack Iran, Barak says, I dont think that that is a subject for public discussion. But I can tell you that the IAEA report has a sobering impact on many in the world and people understand that the time has come... People understand now that Iran is determined to reach nuclear weapons. No other possible or conceivable explanation for what they have been actually doing. And that should be stopped.

You'd be developing nukes if you were Iranian, but the world should join hands and give them the Care-Bear Stare (sanctions) and that'll stop 'em, but we shouldn't go all wimpy on them, but they aren't a threat even if they get nukes, but you won't discuss what to do militarily in public, and the IAEA report has had a sobering impact on many in the world, but apparently not you. Not unstoppable, simply at some point at a much higher price.
Readers should follow the link for the rest of the article and read the actual quotations. Ehud Barak’s comments are being paraphrased and reissued out of context.
Sounds like you are getting a lot of soundbytes mixed up there.
He is saying that if he were the Iranian leader he would want nukes too. He is simply putting himself in his enemies shoes and imagining what they want, what they think. Obviously they want nukes after seeing how immune North Korea has become and how vulnerable Libya was after it abandoned its nuke program etc...
Israel wants to exhaust every possibility to try and stop Iran before having to resort to an attack. The only thing they believe will work is if everyone (including Russia/China) enforces crippling oil/energy sanctions on Iran which would bring the Iranian economy to its knees and maybe make them think twice about nukes. Its a real long shot, he says himself he doesn’t really believe it will happen, but its the only alternative to try for until there is no other option.
There is a reason why Israel hasn’t already attacked the nuke sites already. They could have done it years ago when it would have been much easier. The risks involved are huge, to Israel, the region and maybe even the world. The only risk bigger to Israel is for Iran to actually get the bomb.
So.
Stop them.
America is not Israel’s parent. We have enough troubles.
Deal with it.
But one of those problems is Iran, and not because of Israel. And if you aren’t our parent, then stop telling us what to do, and either help us or get out of our way. Panetta says “don’t touch Iran” and you say “we’re not your parents.” Which is it?
You’re not the boss of us. But we are bestest buddies. So let’s work together: you provide the carriers, naval pilots (we have none of either), we’ll do the beach storming, and you supply us from the carriers. How’s that?
Just read in another thread, Leo Panetta telling Israel not to protect itself, because it might hurt Obama’s poll numbers.
(well that’s not exactly what he said, but it’s what he meant)
Let’s be frank.
The only way what you describe is likely to happen, is if the government of Israel puts real pressure on Jewish Americans to elect Republicans.
Obama isn’t going to help Israel.
Not going to happen. Obama and all liberals, are on the other side.
Due in large part, to Jewish American liberals, who simply are brainwashed into supporting the LEFT.
Always.
Reflexively, and without thinking.
Do the right thing.
Israel needs Republicans in Washington.
So. Support them.
You’re a hundred percent right. I do. I did. I will. But that won’t help stop Iran. The election won’t be decided until November of next year, and the new president won’t be sworn in until January 20 of the year after that. By then Iran will be “unstoppable”. Of course, there is the fact that Ehud Barak is a derriere de chevalliere, but that doesn’t mean that Iran won’t be unstoppable, just that he’s an idiot for saying a bunch of contradictory, incoherent statements about Iran in public and thereby showing that he has no plan whatever for actually dealing with him. So what to do about an unstoppable Iran hell-bent on making his own nukes? Nothing I can think of. What we need to do is what I outlined, but it won’t get done, as you say.
Figures. If we do do what we might do, I only pray that as a side benefit, Obama’s poll numbers go lower than the Dead Sea basin’s altitude. If we’re all alive after it’s done, and the US civil society also survives, amend your constitution to allow a Mussolini-style impeachment of the aforementioned.
“The only way what you describe is likely to happen, is if the government of Israel puts real pressure on Jewish Americans to elect Republicans.”
I’m afraid the government of Israel doesn’t have that sort of power over Jews living in the United States or any other country. There are no levers with which to apply such pressure. All anyone can do is state their arguments forcefully but civilly, and hope one persuades.
