30,000 NE Ohio homes await demolition

Local lawmakers believe more federal demolition funds must be found to stop the dramatic drop in northeast Ohio property values.

Former Cuyahoga County Treasurer Jim Rokakis said he believes the number of condemned homes and buildings in northeast Ohio has ballooned to 30,000.

Rokakis blamed foreclosures and irresponsible banks, investment firms and individuals who have walked away or ignored their distressed properties.

The growth in vacant houses comes at a time when federal neighborhood stabilization funds, used to demolish these homes, will soon run dry.

Rokakis said vacant homes are one of the leading causes of a dramatic drop in regional property values.

"After 10 years of foreclosure crisis, we have an absolutely stunning drop in property values," said Rokakis. "This is not just the problem of the inner city, it's now become the problem of every homeowner in Cuyahoga County."

Rokakis pointed to a study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland...

Like I said, it was a negotiation...
neither side got everything they wanted.

I was surprised by the process.

They started out taxing me at $220K value.
I challenged that the “real” value based on comparables was $180K.
After three rounds of back-and-forth, we “settled” at $186K.

I think most folks just take the county’s word for it and do not challenge.

A new listing showed up in my neighborhood today,
not quite comparable to mine and priced at $162K.

When more taxpayer’s begin to catch on,
many county budgets will be devastated.

What is “Allen-Bradley”?

"Allen-Bradley products from Rockwell Automation include integrated control and information platforms, intelligent motor control and industrial components."

Every real industrial concern in America has something from Allen-Bradley on site.

It would be easier and cheaper just to burn them to the ground and plow over.

Cuyahoga county is not representative of the rest of Ohio at all so please don[’t blame us for what the idiots do up there. We’ve been fighting them for years so I am glad there are less brain dead liberals here now.

It never was. It's always been Pittsburgh-On-The-Lake. The real Ohio starts south of Mansfield.

In Vietnam we all had nightmares about Cleveland.

Nothing wrong with Cleveland & Akron that a little “Jewish Lightning” wouldn’t cure.

A battalion with flame-throwers would be a great start. Or, if we ever resume above ground nuclear weapons testing.

You’ll get used to it. If they get your gun and liquor laws loosened up to our standards, you’ll be better off.

No, we have law abiding citizens who can carry for protection almost everywhere including bars and who can buy adult beverages on Sundays and in every county.

You sound like a Massachusetts liberal.
