Chicken jerky treats linked to mystery illnesses, deaths in dogs

Chicken jerky treats may be to blame for dozens of new reports of mysterious illnesses and some deaths in dogs, prompting a renewed warning for pet owners by the Food and Drug Administration.

At least 70 dogs have been sickened so far this year after reportedly eating chicken jerky products imported from China, FDA officials said. That’s up from 54 reports of illness in 2010. Some of the dogs have died, according to the anecdotal reports from pet owners and veterinarians.

FDA officials say they have not been able to find a cause for the illnesses. Extensive chemical and microbiological testing has failed to turn up a specific contaminant and officials did not identify a specific brand of treats. They note that the reports of illness have not conclusively been tied to chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats.

The new warning follows previous FDA cautions about chicken jerky treats in 2007 and 2008. But after a high of 156 reports of illness in 2007, the number of complaints dropped. Now, it's rising again.

Dog owners and vets are reporting that animals may be stricken with a range of illnesses within days or hours of eating chicken jerky, including kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition characterized by low glucose.

He lived a long time and enjoyed his retirement in the country.

He died in his own yard, well fed and loved, uninjured and not lost.

I say he won. That’s a win.

He’s missed.

I hope my obituary reads as well as that one.

Thank you for posting this!!

My sister lost “Kirby” a few years ago from dry dog food imported from China. The vet said his kidneys failed from whatever poisonous ingredient was added — AND this was an expensive, high end dog food, the kind sold in fancy pet stores!!

My little Shih-tzu loves chicken jerky — he has had terrible skin problems and has spent many hours at the vet ($$$). Vet thought it was a flea allergy but it turns out it wasn’t, vet couldn’t figure it out. Now I’m thinking it is from the chicken jerky!!

I will check labels FROM NOW ON — Waggin’ Train, Milo’s Kitchen and Trader Joe’s chicken strips are regular dog food items at my home.

I would be terribly heartbroken if one of my dogs died — not to mentioned VERY angry.

My Husky and Shitzu love the Waggin’ Train chicken strips. So far, no problems. I just checked the package. I thought they were from North Carolina, but found out they were imported from China.

I’ll keep an eye on this. I worry about anything from China.

We should ban imports of all goods from China, or goods containing any Chinese content, intended for human or animal consumption. This is a survival issue for people. Chinese crap will kill us and our pets.

I found out my dog has allergy's and the vet gave me the name of 4 different commercial foods for her...Some of the grains in dry dog food can cause problems...I changed her to Blue Buffalo. And also found out she is allergic to chicken...so nothing with chicken in it for her...I will give her some chicken and within a hour she is licking her paws, which according to my vet is one of the ways allergy's manifest in dogs. Vegetables like corn are OK but not things like wheat and other grains...some feeds are also gluten free.

Blue buffalo was the only one I could find in my area and that was at the tractor supply store. They carry products for all farm animals and pets....He also told me I could buy what he sells but the names he gave me were just as good as what he sells...it is more expensive than most feed, but cheaper than buying it from him, even her wheezing when laying down has stopped...

Did anyone REALLY think the Chinese bastards would change their ways?

I am not against Chinese imports. However I think EVERYTHING that comes from China or contains products that come from China should be labeled as such so that we can decide for ourselves if we want to buy it.

I wonder if these “treats” were labeled as to country of origin?
