DETROIT (WJBK) - A pair of would-be burglars pick the wrong house to rob on Detroit's West Side. Neighbors tell Fox 2 two men tried to break into a home on the 9000 block of Coyle Friday afternoon.
As it turns out, that home belongs to a retired Detroit Police officer. Neighbors say when the suspects broke into the home, the man fired his gun, killing one of the suspects. The other suspect managed to run away and is still on the loose.
Friends of the retired officer tell us he spent 27 years on the force. "We've been neighbors for a long time. He's a very friendly guy. He helps us watch our homes, it's just good to have a policeman in the neighborhood," John Lucas told Fox 2.
People who live in the area say break-ins on the block have been common in recent weeks. They say they've called Detroit Police before, but officers never came to the neighborhood to follow up on those reports.
The shooting victim is believed to be a 20-year-old man. Police have not released a description of the second suspect. It is still unclear at this time what will happen next for the retired officer who fired the fatal shot.

I was born and raised in Detroit; in the fifties and through most of the sixties it was a great place to live. The sixty-seven riot changed everything. Police made a decison to not protect property...after the riot, everyone who could moved out.
The rest of the city was left to the criminals. When I go back these days to visit family in the burbs...it is just heart breaking to see what’s left.
It looks like Berlin in forty-five. There’s a small business area around the new sports stadia...the cops patrol. The rest is the wild, wild West. You are on your own.
This was not the vision of America the guys on Omaha Beach died for. This part of America is what modern liberalism has wrought.
So, there’s a 20 year-old turd on the run, eh? Hopefully, he gets flushed out before his trail dries up.
Relatives on my dad’s side moved in ‘66. They could see the handwriting.
They actually sold their home and came away in good shape. Not so after ‘67...
It’s probably a good thing that the second guy often gets away for a little while in these things.It helps to spread the news that it’s not a safe line of work any more.

Are the Amish in Detroit also?
There are photos on the internet showing Hiroshima in 1945 & Detroit in 1945. They are accompanied by current photos of the two cities. Quite a contrast.
Googlemap “9000 Coyle, Detroit”. You’ll see some of the homes are well maintained and others not so much. Typical of Detroit. Where the firemen and policemen live the area tends to be nicer. The city used to have a residency rule and once it was lifted (10 or so years ago, I think, most of the homeowners fled to the burbs, so these neighborhoods haven’t had as much time to get rundown. This is the far westside. The closer you get to the city, that’s when you start to see most of the deterioration.
Parkland and to a lesser extent Warrendale. Those are the main city worker areas. As soon as the law passed, just about anyone with kids there got out.
