Islamist PJD Party Wins Morocco Poll
Abdelilah Benkirane's PJD party will be the single biggest party in the new chamber. Morocco's moderate Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD) has won parliamentary elections, say officials.
According to provisional results, the PJD won 80 seats in the 395-seat assembly, Interior Minister Taib Cherkaoui told a news conference.
That would make it the largest party and give it the right to lead a government.
The poll is part of reforms which King Mohamed VI hopes will defuse protests prompted by the Arab Spring.
"We thank the Moroccans who voted for the PJD and we can only be satisfied," PJD leader Abdelilah Benkirane told the AFP news agency.
Mr Benkirane had earlier predicted his party would win 90-100 seats.
Under a new constitution adopted in July, King Mohamed VI must now appoint the prime minister from the party which wins the most seats, rather than naming whomever he pleases.

My next novel is partly set in Morocco, because it is possibly the most Westernized of all islamic nations.
If Morocco can be turned into a sharia state without at least instigating a bloody civil war, there is no hope for any islamic-majority nation on earth.
True, but most Moroccans are very “bad” muslims, or MINOs.
Free elections in any Muslim-majority country will bring Islamists to power because they are far better organized than their secular opponents. That gives them an insurmountable advantage.

Pretty much, as far as elections go. But Morocco has very deep Frenchified european cultural roots, believe it or not. For example, while they might ban alchohol sales in Egypt, if they try it in Morocco, there will be a civil war.
Morocco is also different because of King Mohammed Six. Because he traces his lineage to the first Mad Mo, he is sort of the permanent secular pope of Morocco. Nobody dares call him an apostate, even though his red-headed wife wears her long flowing hair over her shoulders with him in public.
Most Moroccans and nearly all of the military will support the King against any sharia-promoters who would try to overthrow him.
Shoot, the king is even an avid surfer, and surfing has become huge in Morocco. Surfing, hash, bar culture, bikinis on the beaches, these are all deeply rooted in Morocco, relatively speaking, compared to any other arab nations.
That’s why I’m setting half of my 5th novel there. It’s one nominally muslim country that might not get swept into sharia madness.
Time will tell. But it’s a very interesting country, and in no way comparable to the other nations of North Africa.
