"I already said that if he wants to use a teleprompter, then it would be fine with me. [applause, laughter] It has to be fair. [laughter] If you [were] to defend ObamaCare, wouldn't you want a teleprompter?" Gingrich said.

“He was pro-mandate on health care, pro-amnesty, even back then.”

I was around back then. Newt and the Republicans came into power because of two things - opposition to HillaryCare and Billy Bob’s tax increases.

Gingrich’s Contract With America - still sound’s pretty good, and pretty conservative:

On the first day of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority will immediately pass the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:

FIRST, require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;
SECOND, select a major, independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud or abuse;
THIRD, cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
FOURTH, limit the terms of all committee chairs;
FIFTH, ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
SIXTH, require committee meetings to be open to the public;
SEVENTH, require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase;
EIGHTH, guarantee an honest accounting of our Federal Budget by implementing zero base-line budgeting.

Thereafter, within the first 100 days of the 104th Congress, we shall bring to the House Floor the following bills, each to be given full and open debate, each to be given a clear and fair vote and each to be immediately available this day for public inspection and scrutiny.

1. THE FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: A balanced budget/tax limitation amendment and a legislative line-item veto to restore fiscal responsibility to an out- of-control Congress, requiring them to live under the same budget constraints as families and businesses.

2. THE TAKING BACK OUR STREETS ACT: An anti-crime package including stronger truth-in- sentencing, “good faith” exclusionary rule exemptions, effective death penalty provisions, and cuts in social spending from this summer’s “crime” bill to fund prison construction and additional law enforcement to keep people secure in their neighborhoods and kids safe in their schools.

3. THE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY ACT: Discourage illegitimacy and teen pregnancy by prohibiting welfare to minor mothers and denying increased AFDC for additional children while on welfare, cut spending for welfare programs, and enact a tough two-years-and-out provision with work requirements to promote individual responsibility.

4. THE FAMILY REINFORCEMENT ACT: Child support enforcement, tax incentives for adoption, strengthening rights of parents in their children’s education, stronger child pornography laws, and an elderly dependent care tax credit to reinforce the central role of families in American society.

5. THE AMERICAN DREAM RESTORATION ACT: A S500 per child tax credit, begin repeal of the marriage tax penalty, and creation of American Dream Savings Accounts to provide middle class tax relief.

6. THE NATIONAL SECURITY RESTORATION ACT: No U.S. troops under U.N. command and restoration of the essential parts of our national security funding to strengthen our national defense and maintain our credibility around the world.

7. THE SENIOR CITIZENS FAIRNESS ACT: Raise the Social Security earnings limit which currently forces seniors out of the work force, repeal the 1993 tax hikes on Social Security benefits and provide tax incentives for private long-term care insurance to let Older Americans keep more of what they have earned over the years.

8. THE JOB CREATION AND WAGE ENHANCEMENT ACT: Small business incentives, capital gains cut and indexation, neutral cost recovery, risk assessment/cost-benefit analysis, strengthening the Regulatory Flexibility Act and unfunded mandate reform to create jobs and raise worker wages.

9. THE COMMON SENSE LEGAL REFORM ACT: “Loser pays” laws, reasonable limits on punitive damages and reform of product liability laws to stem the endless tide of litigation.

10. THE CITIZEN LEGISLATURE ACT: A first-ever vote on term limits to replace career politicians with citizen legislators.

The Cain / Newt “debate” turned out to be a love-fest.

No kidding. So what's your point. That debate has nothing to do with Gingrich debating Obama.

Cain and Gingrich are personal friends. The purpose of that debate was to get some ideas out, see where they went and test that debating style for the future.

Finally! Rational, logical thought without screaming or name calling (except for the Mr. Teleprompter comment, but seriously who cares) or swearing to sit out the election. Thank you!!

Amen to that.

He is not getting my vote.

How about having various people present questions a few days ahead of time so the candidates can think about them a bit more deeply and present a well-thought response.

Why? If their core values don't support their core convictions on most any topic, they're not prepared to be Prez.

Furthermore, like him or not, Gingrich has done what none of the other presidential candidates have done:

http://www.newt.org/contract/videos

By defining and publishing his plan, whether you agree with it or not, people know his goals and objectives. Where are the plans from Santorum, Huntsman, Paul, Bachmann, Romney, Cain and Perry?

Some people are fed up with the same old crap:

"Vote for me... things will be better."

well I’ve already stated my point in posts 11 and 19 but happy to add more. You may agree or may not. Everyone has their own take on these things.

There is this idea floating around Free Republic that Newt is our savior because he will destroy Obama in debates. It will never happen. Debates don’t decide elections unless there are major gaffes. As long as Obama avoids gaffes the debates mean little as far as deciding the election. Likability is far more important than debating skills to many people. Newt has major problems in that area.

Debates don’t decide elections unless there are major gaffes.

No argument. However, based on cause and effect (possibly just coincidence) Gingrich's poll numbers seem to have increased since the start of the Republican debates. The same might hold true in Presidential debates. I seem to remember the Nixon / Kennedy debate was devastating for Nixon.

Interestingly, two of Newt’s three wives still support his politics/support him politically.

My ex and her entire family are Democrats, dyed into their wool. Over Thanksgiving with them I heard lots of CNN quotes spewed from them as iteration that the Republicans are the enemy of the people. Media will determine the ;winners and losers’ of the comingf debates. Too many Amereicans are well programmed by CNN and the NBC array of commie personae, so it will not matter what happens in the debates or what is stated, the media will spin their commie-in-chief as the clear victor. It will be up to Aemricans to discern the lies and dissembling. And based upon the drek passing as discussion currently on any Perry, Cain, or Newt threaad, I am not encouraged that truth has any meaning anymore.

Newt has consistently been the better debater all along yet his poll numbers only went up recently after Cain slid. Bachmann > Perry > Cain > Gingrich. So it’s not just debating skills. There is this buzz factor and Newt is today’s flavor.

I haven’t given up on Cain but he seems to be yesterday’s news. :-) primaries are supposed to sort these things out however I hope we get enough consolidated mass around a candidate to stop Romney

I’ve no more contacts with registered Democrats, but I recognize people you describe in your report. People ape the TV, registered Rats, and Pubbies do, like they ape on Mondays at work the sportscasters they heard on Sundays. Facts of life.

Cynicism would have been better, but we continue to deal with the syndrome of selective cynicism of “Congress is full of crooks, but my guy is A-OK!”

What to do? Continue efforts to educate, on scale small and large. And let’s count on the so-called Independents, even though many of them are not really so independent.
