I know its a long shot but could a Republican take that seat?

Only a Scott Brown type "Republican."

Not sure if he was a RINO or not but Sean Bielat took on Barney in ‘10 and ran this ad, “the Barney Shuffle”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QbNGnvBR7k

In the 6th district there will be a primary for the GOP.
Opposing incumbent John Tierney will be Bill Hudak (who
ran and lost in ‘10) and former state Sen. Rich Tisei. Tisei,
who ran as Charlie Baker’s running mate in ‘10 (Gov/Lt Gov)
has announced he is openly gay. Whether he wins the GOP
nomination or final election, we’ll have to see.

Barney had a very formidable conservative opponent in the last election and won handily. I suspect that the Massachusetts electorate is getting a little tired of garden variety Democratic hacks like Martha Coakley, but that does not mean they are ready elect real conservatives. Especially in Barney’s district there a lot of people who suck off the embolistic government teat.

Hey, Scott's not all bad -- the League of Conservation Voters (or some such -- leftwing names all sound alike to me!) has been running hit piece ads against him for his votes on "handouts to big oil" (a/k/a standard depreciation allowances). Every time I see one, I want to cheer him on!

As to a Republican taking Barney's seat -- well, last time a really good young guy ran against him (name of Sean Bielat, IIRC). I don't think he did that well, but he scared Barney enough to make him drop a lot of money campaigning. And I believe (not sure) Barney's district was affected by our recent redistricting, not wiped out, of course, but maybe took on area not likely to be enamored of him or lost a section that loves him. I hope Bielat makes another run!
