Gingrich targets "sanctuaries" for illegal immigrants

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich told a South Carolina town hall on Monday that as president he would block federal funds to any city that "declared itself a sanctuary" for illegal immigrants.

Gingrich, fresh from a key endorsement from an influential New Hampshire newspaper, is on a three-day swing through South Carolina, an early primary state that his campaign has dubbed his "southern firewall."

"No American president has the right to side with foreigners," Gingrich told a crowd of hundreds at the College of Charleston, after reciting a list of 16 countries that he said had filed friend of the court briefs in a Justice Department lawsuit against South Carolina's new immigration law.

The law, which goes into effect on January 1 barring an injunction from a federal court, requires police officers to check the immigration status of anyone they stop or detain for another reason and makes it a felony to knowingly transport or harbor undocumented immigrants.

I just can’t stand how this guy just says whatever he wants to say as if we’re stupid. First he basically wants amnesty, and now he’s Mr. Tom Tancredo on sanctuary cities? I want a President who I can depend on to actually have principles, not just telling us what we want to hear to get elected.

See your problem is that went off the deep end with your wild "amnesty" accusations. If it were true then it wouldn't be congruent with his latest statements. Anyone with reading comprehension understands it's all part of the same plan to deal with illegal immigrants. I'm sorry if these statements don't line up with the straw-Newt that you created in your own mind. Next time, pay attention to the real one.

Awful. Newt invents a new faux immigration “plan” daily. Just sickening to see the base willingly manipulated by the master. What happened to “once bitten, twice shy”? Or “The Pied Piper”. It’s all forgotten in the name of supposed expedience. Didn’t we do all this in 2008 and get McCain?

You got that right! He doesn’t seem to be able to make up his mind. Newt was FOR illegals before he was against them!

Newt invents a new faux immigration “plan” daily.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this all start over what Gingrich said his plan was at the last debate? If he invents a new fake plan everyday, then why are you treating what he said at the debate as his real plan?

Another massive failure and hole in Newt’s plan is that there is no requirement that States and even Federal Agencies check on the immigration status of those requesting social services.

The Kriebel Foundation Newt cites as the basis for his "new" "plans" has as it's basic premise that there are millions of jobs that Americans simply "won't do", and that we "need" illegals to do them. Take a look at this video and see what happens when jobs taken by illegals are liberated.

Ah, yes, reading comprehension. Not enough people know what that means these days. It means, “words mean things”. If people would just read and understand the words, posts would change on this board. Those knee jerk reactions would go away.

A fence? What is he trying to do? Hold all the illegals here? What a joke.

The problem with the "secure the border first" premise is that it doesn't deal with the root cause, which is a demand for illegal labor. Until we make it so painful to employers that they stop, we will never stop illegal immigration. When we build a wall they will start coming on boats, and there are already a bunch that just overstay their visas.

You don't rid a city of rats by going out and killing every rat. First you have to eliminate their food supply, by cleaning up streets and how you handle your garbage.

Thanks for removing #16. I should have hit the abuse button as that was an offensive post.

they will self deport saving the US money all the way around!

Sure they will. They'll pull up stakes and leave the place they consider their home, maybe the only home they have ever known, those who, as we have seen, consider themselves "real Americans" whether you and your laws agree or not.

Just because you deprive them of the means to make a living, you think they will: not seek work off the books completely, providing whatever services under the table, joining the Black Market like many already do.

Did you know that fully 10% to 20% of the entire US economy is already under the table? Lots of work available that is invisible to the gubmint.

They will: not decide to say "F* you, Gringo," and join gangs, start selling drugs, pimping, all the illicit business opportunities that a mass urbanized culture offers. They will not: turn to petty street crime, "do what they have to do."

And tell us: if they show up at an ER bleeding from a knife wound, will you not treat them and let them die on the floor of the lobby? You said "No medical." Do you mean it? Well do You? With the evening newscam on you as you stand there? Tell me you are going to try to do that as a general policy, with an election coming up in a few months. Tell that to Americans who basically don't much give a damn about illegals as long as it doesn't affect them personally, but feel like they aren't all that evil that their expulsion is a life and death matter.

Think. Look past the juvenile sound bites. Put yourself in the shoes of the illegal that just got run off his job and prevented from getting a new one. You were brought here at the age of two and don't know Mexico from China. What would you do? You and your own two kids?

Do Mexicans care about the fate of somebody who illegally crosses their border from El Salvador, or Guatemala?

So why should we have different standards toward our border than the Mexicans do?

“First he basically wants amnesty”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! FIRST he will secure the border.

NEVER does he want amnesty. Saying it over & over again doesn’t make it so. Newt is NOT for amnesty PERIOD. Get your facts straight before you go off half cocked and half informed.

Just tonight on O’Reilly, Bill asked him “Would you put a border fence from Brownsville to San Diego if you were president? Newt said “YES”.

You have to keep current!

Again, half cocked or half witted. Border fence is step ONE! not the only step. Newt.org, my friend, educate yourself.

If we can't deport them now, how are we going to deport them in the future? Illegal aliens get benefits now thru their anchor babies--300,000 to 400,000 born every year. And 57% of all immigrant headed households with children are on at least one welfare program.

From Newt's plan #6

We need a path to legality, but not citizenship, for some of these individuals who have deep ties to America, including family, church and community ties. We also need a path to swift but dignified repatriation for those who are transient and have no roots in America.

...a path to swift but dignified repatriation for those who are transient and have no roots in America? LOL. So Newt how do you round them up for their repatriation?

Once an applicant has been granted the right to obtain legal status, he or she will have to pay a penalty of at least $5,000.

So the price of admission into the US is a paltry $5,000. You could multiply that by 10 times and still have hundreds of millions of people around the globe willing to pay such a price to take advantage of what this country has to offer.

Moving forward, those who receive this status will have to prove on a regular basis that they can support themselves without entitlement programs and pay for health insurance or else risk the ability to stay in the United States.

Mere words, just words. Exactly how do you enforce this. And what about benefits for their anchor babies who are US citizens. Why can LPRs today receive welfare, Medicaid, and food stamps after being in this country for five years and Newt's class of LPR not be eligible? Since they will pay into Medicare and SS, they will receive those benefits along with EITC and whatever support they receive through Obamacare, which is subsidized by the federal government based on salary levels, i.e., 133% of the poverty level. Newt is making this stuff up as he goes along. His plan is nonsense to anyone knowledgeable about immigration.

Once you have a fence then that only leave 12 to 20 million already in this country. Employment enforcement should be step ONE.

“You have to keep current!”

That’s right because Newt is flip-flopping as fast as Mitt Romney. If either say say the same thing today and a month from now, it will be a miracle.

New is Mitt’s short, fat, more courageous brother. Both are unprincipled big government politicians wired in the Beltway. Either will say or do anything to get elected.

Obama is NOT for amnesty. McCain is NOT for amnesty. It depends on how you define amnesty. Here is the common definition:

Definition: Amnesty, from the same Greek root as "amnesia," forgives past crimes and removes them from the record for future purposes. In the context of immigration, amnesty is commonly defined as granting legal status to a group of individuals unlawfully present in a country. It overlooks the alien's illegal entry and ongoing illegal presence and creates a new legal status that allows the recipient to live and work in the country.

Obama and McCain claim that their plan is not amnesty because people have to pay a fine, learn English, and get to the back of the line on an earned path to citizenship.

Newt is saying his plan is not amnesty because people have to pay a fine, learn English, and just get legal status without citizenship.

These are all amnesty. Any legislation that allows people to stay and work here, the objective of their crime, is amnesty. We must not only prevent the Democrats and some moderate Republicans from hijacking the meaning of the word amnesty, but the public must be made aware about the true impact of an amnesty. The Heritage Foundation concluded that the cost of amnesty alone would be $2.6 trillion just for the entitlement programs. And the number of additional LEGAL immigrants who would join those who were the recipients of amnesty through chain migration, i.e., family reunification, would approach 70 million over a 20-year period, assuming there are only 12 million illegal aliens. We cannot assimilate such numbers. An amnesty would destroy the United States of America with the stroke of a pen.
