Former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Sunday became the latest pundit to concede that while Mitt Romney may not be the perfect candidate, conservatives should prepare to support him as their nominee.
As Ben Smith reported, when Huckabee was asked Sunday by 77WABC New York "Investigative Radio" host Aaron Klein to comment on whether the tea party will sit out the 2012 election if former Massachusetts Gov. Romney is the Republican nominee, Huckabee responded with the following:
It would be real tragic if they stayed out because Mitt Romney may not be their first choice, but Mitt Romney every day of the week and twice on Sunday is gonna to be a much more effective president for issues that they care about than Barack Obama. And I think sometimes there is this anxiety within the Republican Party of who is the perfect candidate. The answer is: there isn't one. And so, what you find is you have to decide who can survive the process. And whoever that is-- and if it's Mitt Romney, then I think Republicans and conservatives and tea party need to get behind him and say, 'You may not be our first choice, but between you and Obama, I'll vote forty times to help get you elected.'
Huckabee's comments are the latest indication conservatives are readying one another to "hold their noses" and vote for Romney, who opponents on both sides of the aisle paint as the most moderate major Republican candidate in the 2012 race.
Last week, it was conservative pundit Ann Coulter who was dispensing the "get ready for Romney" advice.

Yuck Fou Huck!
Every time he opens his mouth I lose more respect for him.
Fox news should drop him like a bad case of clap.
The lesser of two evils is....EVIL.
No. I will never vote for RINO - Romney. But what is upsetting me the most is that we just don’t have a Conservative Party. I see voting Third Party for a LONG time to come unless we eradicate these RINO elites in the GOP.
Heaven knows I’m completely done with the GOP. I’ll support certain candidates, policies and ballot initiatives, but as a Party, I’m done. This is insane. Why are we Dem-lite?
They probably made a deal that Romney would free all the violent criminals the Huckster couldn’t around to unleashing on the public.
Both have and would support mandated health care.
Both have, and would, support some form of Amnesty.
Both have and would continue to support big ideas, big government and big spending.
Gingrich appears to be more wacky when it comes to the environment and is a professional lobbyist.
Neither are trustworthy or honest.
Romney would be terrible, but why should we think Gingrich would be any better?
70% of Republicans don’t want Romney.
He’s not going to have a cake walk in the primaries.
Huckabee and Romney can both fsck themselves. Or each other.
Whatever floats their boats.
He didn't tell Tea Partiers to prepare for Romney. He said IF Romney is the candidate, the Tea Party should vote for him.
Nowhere does he say Romney is the inevitable choice.
Hucks got to keep his boss Roger Ailes happy, all the fox folks have to do as they are told by Roger.
Conservative media and certainly FOX are obvious in their promotion of Romney and have the tools to TRY and pull off a Romney cram down right along with the establishment. The noise machine will be increasing from now on, as these primaries are at the door and Romney is well past his chance at landing an early knock out of all other candidates. He can’t even maintain the lead. If Romney doesn’t seal the deal, and he has not, then we have a chance for a non-Romney.
you got it right.
Same error the folks make who say, “the priority is to defeat Obama.”
No, the priority is to defeat Romney. THat is the first and last priority. Everything else is dog food.
” Hucks got to keep his boss Roger Ailes happy, all the fox folks have to do as they are told by Roger. “ <<<
You are on to something there. I know there are a number of candidates still holding on, but FOX has been sidling up with the establishment for a cram down of Romney, using their noise machine to do it, since the get-go.
Perry got in the way, then Cain and now Newt. We should be thanking these men, or it would be already over.
I can easily afford four more years of divided government. No problem at all. I rather enjoy the idea of pitting obama against a conservative house AND senate actually.
Fat chance!
How did you get onto this thread? You actually read the article and make sense. Huckabee wasn’t endorsing Romney, he was just trying to prepare Republicans to deal with reality, which is sometimes an unpopular position around here.
I can’t stand Romney myself, but I’d crawl over broken glass to vote for him if that’s my only choice other than Obama. All this “I’ll NEVER vote for him! I’ll just sit home and help reelect Obama” or “I’ll write in Ron Paul!” or whatever, makes me want to scream. ANYONE short of a dug-up and reanimated Stalin is better than Obama, and if you don’t do everything you can to prevent four more years of him, then I don’t consider you to give a damn about America’s future.
As I always say, my fellow Republicans have to protect the Second Amendment so they’ll always be able to shoot themselves in the foot every time there’s an election.
