MD Anderson boss predicts cancer cure

The new president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center said he expects a cure for cancer will be found on his watch. If not, he said, he'll consider his tenure a failure.

“And I will not fail,” said Dr. Ronald DePinho, who moved to Houston in September from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

The plain-spoken DePinho, who talks of “kicking cancer's butt,” said new technologies are the key to “putting cancer in the history books.”

“The opportunity has never been greater to truly end this dreaded disease,” he said during a press conference prior to the event. “This was not conceivable five, 10 years ago.”

Congratulations. MD Anderson is a spectacular operation and if anyone can pull this off, they can.

I’ve never heard that before, just that it helps to releive some pain and misery, and help stimulate appetites. Where did you see that it cures cancer?

You can Google it. I’m skeptical ... but the info is interesting.

That’s ok, it’s not worth the effort. I figured you had a specific address.

I’m very happy for you. In 1971 my Father was operated on for throat cancer, heavy smoker for years. The surgery was successful but he had to learn how to talk again. I remember him saying to me that cancer is a disease that is not cured, it only goes into remission. Now, for many cases, the opposite is true. What does bother me is that there are only 4 routine screening tests for cancer; prostate, ovarian, colon, and breast cancers. For so many others by the time the disease is properly diagnosed it is too late. I would very much like to see more tests to screen more forms of cancer.
Enjoy your life!!

Nope; it was a public post, not a private one, so anyone reading it could be considered “an addressee”.

Cancer research and treatment is a massive, lucrative industry. Not everyone wants to see a cure that will end this gravy train

You obviously don't know a) anything at all about cancer research or b) anyone involved in the cancer research enterprise. If you did you wouldn't smear shit like this on honorable dedicated people.

Whatever. Dad died a few years ago...lung cancer. Mom died in February...bladder cancer. Sister died last month...colon cancer.

Make of that what you will.

I agree with you, but as an "oldie" like me, you should know that this behavior is fairly standard here on FR on any science type thread.
