The new president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center said he expects a cure for cancer will be found on his watch. If not, he said, he'll consider his tenure a failure.
“And I will not fail,” said Dr. Ronald DePinho, who moved to Houston in September from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

The plain-spoken DePinho, who talks of “kicking cancer's butt,” said new technologies are the key to “putting cancer in the history books.”
“The opportunity has never been greater to truly end this dreaded disease,” he said during a press conference prior to the event. “This was not conceivable five, 10 years ago.”

Queue the conspiracy types who believe we’ve already cured cancer but the cure is being kept in a secret safe somewhere that is guarded by the Illuminati.

As someone who’s been battling cancer for 6 years I sure hope he’s right!
Cancer research and treatment is a massive, lucrative industry. Not everyone wants to see a cure that will end this gravy train.
Keep in mind that this claim was made at a fundraiser.
With this statement, I think he has a credibility problem (imo).
That “12th century alchemy” you refer to is the reason I am still among the living.
Hope he’s not experimenting on embryos. If he is, I hate to tell him but God won’t allow a cure to be found.
I agree. I don’t believe that the proton radiatin treatment I received for prostate cancer existed in the 12th century.
(and it worked!!)
But it still saves lives and helps people.
I would imagine God is fully aware of what he’s doing and will be doing.

We were told back in the 60’s that there would be a cure for cancer shortly. Hope this guy is right this time.

Me too. It worked just fine.
My mom was diagnosed with Chronic Myolegenous Leukemia (CML) on December 26, 1980. She died less than one year later, on October 8, 1981 as a result.
I was personally diagnosed on September 30, 2009, with the exact same form of Leukemia. Today, due to this "12th Century Alchemy", primarily cyto-genetic drug therapy, I am living what seems to be a strong and seemingly healthy life, with my cancer completely in remission, and my quality of life greatly surpassing that of 3 years ago.
Skepticism is a good thing, except when the skeptics have absolutely no clue about the opinions they're espousing.
Sign me up to sing in the Cancer Survivor’s Choir . . . thanks to chemo and the oncologists who knew how to administer and monitor treatment.
Maybe one of the happiest days in my life was the day my inherited oncologist at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland AFB, Tx, kicked me out of oncology and sent me back to my primary care provider. I considered it a Graduation Day.
They don’t keep cancer survivors beyond seven years. At that point, I suppose, we’re taking up time and space better used for patients who are in the condition I was in at the beginning of treatment.
I entered treatment from WHMC’s emergency room and was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma variation. Spent most of the next year being arm-chaired-wheeled everywhere, including chemo.

She could barely lift the wheel chair out of the trunk of our car when we arrived for treatment. She administered my daily injections, kept track of medications I barely remembered being prescribed, helped me sit and stand and go in the house where I needed to go. All the time hooked up to an oxygen bottle and a house-length oxygen line hooked up to an oxygen producing machine.
None of that was imaginable in the 12th nor the 19th century.
MD Anderson in Houston has an awesome reputation. My first military oncologist, the guy who under supervision of the department, I credit with saving my life, took a leave from my treatment so that he might travel to Houston to take some kind of certification examination. I think he probably passed.
