Royal Marines snipers foil Somali pirates

PIRATES were arrested in the Seychelles – thanks to the Royal Marines.

It happened after a Spanish trawler sent out a mayday call saying they were being attacked by a gang of seven.

The marines, who were on the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Fort Victoria, flew in a helicopter to the fishermen’s aid.

They fired warning shots at the Somali pirates, who were arrested.

Lieutenant Alastair Thompson said: “The operation was superbly co-ordinated.”

On Monday the supply ship, patrolling about 420 nautical miles from the Seychelles, received information that a Spanish fishing vessel had come under attack from a group of pirate vessels.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "The ship's Lynx helicopter was quickly despatched to investigate," the spokesman said.

"Once at the scene, the helicopter identified two suspect vessels, a whaler and a skiff, in the vicinity of the fishing vessel.

"The faster of the two, a skiff, sped away at over 25 knots as the helicopter gave chase.

"When the skiff ignored orders to stop, a specially trained sniper on board the Lynx helicopter fired warning shots ahead of the fleeing vessel which stopped and the suspected pirates on board were then taken to Fort Victoria via boat.

......Arrest..... ???? Why ??????

Shoot the buggers and let the sharks take care of the waste material...

Looks pretty simple to me.

i like the way the russkies handle it. blow up the pirate boat and put the pirates in a rubber raft, with a leak.

I don’t guess I understand.

It takes a sniper to fire a shot into the ocean and they are proud of it?

" a specially trained sniper on board the Lynx helicopter fired warning shots ahead of the fleeing vessel "

Snipers that shoot into the Ocean are more special than regulation snipers that take out targeted objectives?

Not directly related but it reminded me of something.

I saw a show about Coast Guard snipers a while back. They fire a .50 cal sniper rifle hanging in a sling in the door of a helicopter. Their primary job is to shoot out the engines of drug smuggling boats. I have a hard enough time hitting a perfectly still target while standing at the range. I can’t imagine the concentration it takes to hit a high speed target bouncing up and down on the waves from a helicopter.

What does it mean about the world when the US president can order the killing of a US citizen anywhere in the world, but armed forces can’t kill known pirates on the high seas?

Long ago there was a saying “scratch any Englishman and right below the surface you’ll find a pirate.” I give all the credit in the world to the Royal Marines doing their job, but their society is no longer the one that carved an empire out of “savage lands.”

I think all pirates should just be tossed in the ocean. If they can swim home then they survive.

Arrested? Why not just sink them? Sharks have to eat too.

Due to Royal Budget cutbacks,
the Royal Marine sniper only had 2 Royal rounds.

Just as US Marines are getting medals for holding instead of killing the enemy maybe they get the same in the Royal Marines!

A shot through the head of the guy running the skiff would have been very sufficient a warning. You’ve got to feed prisoners and keep them for years.

In the old days they would have hung the bastards and fed them to the sharks.

Maybe they can be exchanged for the pirates’ hostages. Might get something good out of keeping these shits alive after all.

Can you read? We’re talking about Britain here...this was a TREMENDOUS accomplishment by their standards.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?.”

They can’t do jack against those people from the south and the ‘Asians’ as they call them. The country is being overrun, and its days are numbered...and the number is low.

Of course the RM snipers, like any, are trained to kill.

The modern rules re piracy however mean they have to fire a warning shot first. Its the same for any military force on the seas.
