You can sift through a 50 year career and find a lot of things that “sound” like ammunition to use against Newt. At the end of the day it is irrelevant to me. Usually, Newt will have a logical explanation for any soundbite you can come up with, but the present is what I care about, because that is where we live.

Gingrich also stood shoulder to shoulder with Nancy Pelosi to pass the “Criminal Safezones Act” which prevents armed citizens from defending themselves in certain arbitrary locations. You and I both know that Criminal Safezones don’t protect law-abiding citizens, but actually protect the criminals who ignore them.(3)

So he hasn't, apparently, held on to his conservative values,

Newt never had and conservative principles because he has no principles at all. He'll say whatever he thinks will be to his advantage and take whatever position he thinks will be to his benefit. He started as a Democrat, but when he was offered big campaign contributions by Roy Richards to switch to Republican he dropped the Democrats and took on the mantle of a Republican. Newt is basically a whore doing whatever he thinks will bring him the most benefit.

This was put together by another candidate so the motive is obviously to show Newt's lack of conservatism, but it is factually correct.

No surprise. He really has a trail of accomplishments doesnt he?

I saw Newt in an recent interview claim his work in congress(house member) in the 1980s helped the US win the Cold war.

Another interview he said he cheated on his wife because he got caught up in trying to save the country.

This would be really funny if it wasnt so tragic.

Newt is a narcissist. There is no point in asking him anything. He will say what you want to hear. That is what a narcissist does, especially when they want and need something from you: i.e.: your support and your vote. The only way to know what a narcissist believes is to look at their actions. Their words/positions can change w the audience, as Newt has amply demonstrated.

“He was concerned about the future of conservatism as there was virtually no way to get the conservative message out.”

The whole thing was spearheaded by RR and his lawyer, Newt was a bit player.

Let’s look at this in perspective...when this was proposed, there WAS NO CONSERVATIVE MEDIA. No Rush, no Fox News, no FR. It was Dan Rather, Walker Cronkite, etc. Conservatives supported the fairness doctrine because there was no competition to the leftist ideas of the day on the airwaves.

He’s also compared himself to Reagan and Thatcher, and dubbed himself ‘the definer of civilization’.

If a Dem had this level of grandiosity, we’d spot them a mile away. When Newt does it his supporters just shrug it off.

There is not a perfect candidate, not even Goldwater. A lot of things can change between now and Super Tuesday when I will vote. But if I had to vote today, it would be Gingrich. That rating for Pelosi would be how she voted as a democrat. Say what you will about Gingrich, he is our best bet to defeat Obama|Clinton ticket.

Seems like a couple of months ago there were no Newt supporters. I guess his ‘debating’ skills impressed them.

One debate he claimed that Reagan made SS solvent again by cutting taxes. I changed the channel after that. Too brilliant for me.

You hit that nail on the head, big time. I can recall when sane conservatives wanted nothing to do w Newt. But he has since said the right words, and now he is golden.

I asked this once before, and got no answer. I’ll try again. What if Wiener had claimed he tweeted his erection in part because of his passion for the USA? How would conservatives had responded?

But Newt says he broke his marriage vows partly due to his passion for the country, and ho hum. I stopped trying to understand it. It makes no sense.

Gingrich is best chance to defeat Obama but I guess you are one of the people who would rather have another four years of Obama because you must have your own way like some spoiled brat or worse. I suspect some of you people are skinheads, republic of texas anarchists or worse - a libertarian.

This was the time when there was only ABC, NBC, CBS, AND PBS. CNN was very new. There was no talk radio and no internet blogs. The only place folks got information was from the big 3 networks.

President Reagan’s staff all supported the continuation of the Fairness Doctrine because it protected THEM, the conservatives, from a liberal press.

That is why Gingrich also supported it. He was not alone, given that the president’s own staff supported it.

Reagan vetoed it anyway. But to pretend that Gingrich was some crazed liberal running around attempting to foist a liberal fairness doctrine on the nation is simply wrong about the times, the history, and about Gingrich.

RE :”You hit that nail on the head, big time. I can recall when sane conservatives wanted nothing to do w Newt. But he has since said the right words, and now he is golden.

He sounded just as brilliant in 1995 leading up to the Clinton/Newt government shutdowns. But later that year after a number shutdowns and mis-steps and his idiotic statements, his public approval took a dive and he gave Clinton exactly what he demanded in spending. My favorite is the Federal employees actually got paid for not being at work during the shutdown so the whole thing cost even more than no shutdown. I actually heard Newt on FNC/Cavuto months ago claim that Clinton caved to him on that standoff.

Newt is dangerous.
