Minister: China wants to build U.S. roads, rails

China wants to convert some of its mountain of U.S. government debt into investment in renovating American roads and subways, the commerce minister said Friday.

Speaking to a business group, Chen Deming said China wants closer co-operation with the United States in infrastructure, clean energy and technology.

Such investments would tie China more closely to Western economies and might help defuse fears Beijing will use its $3.2-trillion in foreign reserves -- some $1.15-trillion of that in Treasury and other U.S. government debt -- as a political weapon.

“We hope to achieve cooperation in the area of infrastructure,” Chen told members of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Chen said he was amazed at the high quality of American subways and other infrastructure when he visited 20 years ago but many roads, railways and ports today need renovation.

“China is willing to turn some of our holdings of your debt into investment in the United States, hoping to create jobs for the United States,” he said.

Why not? They built the Western half of the first transcontinental railroad about 150 years ago.

Irishmen built the Eastern half.

Besides, if you don't put out enough effort they will just shoot you in the head and sell your organs. What better incentive to work!

Why go to war with a country if you can own all the means of transportation and their ports. Make them pay you for the privilege of being able to navigate their country w/o the costly messiness of war. This will end well.

I pray they’ll have nothing to do w/the actual construction. We know the quality of Chinese products (pet food, human food.)

"Chen said he was amazed at the high quality of American subways and other infrastructure when he visited 20 years ago but many roads, railways and ports today need renovation. "

That's due to 20 more years of 'rat city control.

It'd be better to just come over and shanghai all the Looters in the US.

How exactly would this work. Say I owe you $100,000. I offer to come over to your place and build you a garage. Is that what this guy is saying? How can they leverage our debt to them? Wouldn’t we pay them to come over here and do the project? Would they bring Chinese workers and pay them $2.30/hour?

I suspect that what they’re trying to do is get into the graft and corruption of government contracting. Like GM and Chrysler they’d get special deal and taxpayer subsidies? The article lacks any modicum of sense.

Just think of all the intelligence they could gather by building our infrastructure.

There is plenty of legitimate money for roads but its all siphoned off for crap like public transportation, bike trails, rain gardens, parking space finding phone apps etc.

Yeah...great....

I read about the factories in China that are specialized in "thinning" re-bar....

Truck drives up with 10 big rolls of re-bar....

drives off later with 12 rolls.

Can they do it without union labor and displace the Democrat party at the same time? Go for it!

If they do the same great quality job they build into their railways and roadways and dams, no thanks.

So maybe Chinese laborers will replace Mexicans on our highways.

"“China is willing to turn some of our holdings of your debt into investment in the United States, hoping to create jobs for the United States,” he said."

Oh, I see. So the Mexicans would continue to have jobs through those most honorable "temp" offices (no pay for driving, showing up, and waiting for jobs).

China would also like to make our drugs, and vaccines, and oh, yeah, our military weaponry, from rockets to planes, and our super computers and our spacecraft and all our heavy machinery.

Until we make nothing.

Then they cut us off.

What could possibly go wrong?
