Romney Declines Lincoln-Douglas Debate Against Gingrich

With the Republican presidential primary appearing to have narrowed into a two-man contest, Human Events and Red State moved quickly to lock down a date for a Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

The two organizations went so far this past Monday as to firm up the Annenberg Theater at the Newseum in Washington as the venue on Dec. 19 after another debate originally scheduled that day was canceled. For its part, the Newseum was excited to host the pre-primary forum.

There was just one problem. While Gingrich was ready to take his place on the stage, the Romney campaign politely declined in a series of mostly e-mail exchanges.

As Joe Guerriero, a Human Events editor, put it to RCP: “Newt was all over it, and the Romney camp basically said no. It wasn’t a harsh no, but it was a no.”

“But of course Romney knows a trap when he sees one so he was wise to decline.”

The VAST majority of the public will not see this decision as having been motivated by wisdom of any kind.

“It’d take a Noam Chomsky to stand toe to toe and debate Newt.”

On the subject of linguistics maybe...but I doubt that he could outdo Speaker Gingrich debating anything regarding political philosophy or history of the USA.

“I didn’t know we were electing a pope. I thought we were electing a president.”

A president should be a person of great character with a strong moral foundation. He doesn’t have to be perfect but he should be unafraid to admit his mistakes and learn from them.

Personally, I also wish to elect a person who knows his/her limitations and sincerely seeks wisdom and assistance from God.

LOL!

I cannot stand Romney. He is my last choice. Newt is not my first by any means, but Newt s a MILLION times better than Romney.

Wish Palin or Bachman were the candidate.

You have a far too high regard for Chomsky...really. Think about his political philosophy.

if Romney challenged him to a discussion on the importance of marriage vows and being faithful.

Eh ???

I doubt if Romney would ever do that ...

Romney would get stomped if he tried that subject...

His so called “faith” is too important to him...

I agree. This was damage control by Romney in advance. Reject the offer of a debate and suffer now or accept and suffer much more in the future. This will hurt Romney but not as much as losing a debate to Gingrich.

This is really a terrific strategy by Gingrich. After all his offer was accepted by Cain and rejected by Romney. Do you think that fact just might come up occasionally in future Newt interviews?

I think we can safely assume so.

Only a debate not set up by him. Romney would, on the other hand, take the debate if he set it up himself.

“Newt’s already tried that once regarding Romneycare. Romney shut him down completely when he (Romney) stated that he got the idea of a government mandate to purchase healthcare insurance from Newt’s support of the federal government forcing me to buy something. Newt had absolutely no response to it.

Don’t get me wrong. I have no use for either Romney or Newt. Neither will be able to go after Obama regarding Obamacare, as Obama will just say he was doing what Romney and Newt supported, and followed their lead on the subject.”

I have to admit, you bring up an interesting point. I think it’s more along the lines of not doing debate because his opponent set up the terms. If Romney set it up, he would be inviting Gingrich over.

I also agree with the Healthcare part, if Gingrich does stumble to go after Romney on the wrong issues, the whole debate hurts the GOP more than it has to, it also wouldn’t make either candidate look all that smart.

I don’t like Romney, but I believe he belongs back in accounting and corporate services, not in the presidency, but then again, I am stuck in a dilemna given what I know about Gingrich, his reckless spending, bounced checks, resigning instead of facing up to his ethics allegations, and even more, all while he was holding office as Speaker of the House. I know that either Obama will pound Gingrich as unfit to be president with these facts about his own personal corruption, or if Gingrich can outsmear Obama, he will give a possible half-crack job unless I am wrong and his reckless spending tendencies have been cured. Either way, Newt’s got baggage, and even if he is a RINO, it still worries me.
