McCarthy was windbag, a drunk, and a horses can; And you know this from personal experience? All of these charges were the knee jerk reaction of liberal democrats in government and the media. Senator McCarthy was the victim of a smear campaign that would make the last couple weeks of Herman Cain's life look like a meeting of the literary society.
Have you ever read anything written by the late Senator? I would recommend "America's Retreat From Victory".
