Backstage at a Candidates’ Forum, After the TV Lights Go Dark

Backstage can be something of an inner sanctum at a presidential debate: even though they are appearing on live television before millions of Americans, the candidates are used to having their clubhouse hermetically sealed from the public before and after they take the stage.

That was not the case for the six major Republican candidates who participated in the Fox News Channel forum on Saturday night when the network invited a New York Times reporter to roam behind the scenes as they took turns before a panel of conservative state attorneys general and the Fox News host Mike Huckabee. How each reacted offered an interesting reflex test of the candidates and their organizations.

Mitt Romney’s campaign stood out by going into defensive mode immediately, insisting that the reporter stay far away. The other candidates engaged to a varying degree in a little conversation as they left the stage — none more than Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker, who is now ahead of Mr. Romney in some polls.

Enlightening...

Come on Mitt! What's you afraid of?

How long can he get away with this strategy?

Mitt was “hiding” not saying much as usual.
Typical “dont rock the boat” liberal.

But that was not the case for Newt.
His responses were right on, and the best of all.
See a re-run if you can.

He should cheer up. He had a lovely puff piece written about him in Parade Magazine yesterday. It was so sweet I had to go check my blood sugar and I’m not even a diabetic.

I really enjoyed seeing it and then had the chance to each again.Newt impressed me.I know he isn’t a conservative per say but he would be a heck of a lot better than what we have now.

Slowing the car down so it only goes over the cliff at 30 miles an hour instead of 80 is a waste of effort. We are still going over the cliff.

The rest of the candidates, expect Paul, are cookie cutter GOP Establishment cut outs. The same “fix government and make it work better” drones the GOP Party Establishment loves to pimp every election year.

Going to be hilarious watching the Newt Cult works feverishly to elect him only so they can be knifed in the back by Newt on inauguration day 2013.

kook paul is just as establishment as the rest. He does pork earmarks and then votes against the bill to simulate being an earmark virgin.

He runs for president as a job not an aspiration.

It is a two man race now and NOBODY is in third.

What most people do not get, as important as it is, is that Newt is a FIGHTER with massive experience combined with conservatism in the right places — unlike ALL the other Repubs on that stand. Forget Romney - he is Washington liberal establishment - Romneycare anyone???

The cream will rise to the top. People are liking what they see and hear — because it is what THEY want. And that is what America is all about.

They all take their orders from the establishment. It just may differ in the degree to which they do.

IMHO Paul comes off to most of the mushy middle like their crazy uncle they have to put up with at Christmas. He;s ok for a while then starts off on a tangent where everyone starts looking at each other wondering if he has finally lost it?
