~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: NAS Oceana, Virginia

Naval Air Station Oceana or NAS Oceana is a military airport located in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is a United States Navy Master Jet Base. It is also known as Apollo Soucek Field, named after Lieutenant (later Admiral) Apollo Soucek, who was a Navy Test Pilot and world record altitude holder in 1930, having flown a Curtiss "Hawk" biplane to an altitude of 43,166 feet.

Home to eighteen strike fighter squadrons of F/A-18 Hornets and F/A-18 Super Hornets, the base is the sole East Coast Master Jet Base and home to all the east coast strike-fighter (VFA) units (excluding VFA-86 and Marine Corps VMFA squadrons). Training is conducted by VFA-106 Gladiators in their F/A-18C/D Hornets and F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.

Today NAS Oceana operates 18 F/A -18 Hornet squadrons including Fleet Composite Squadron Twelve (VFC-12), a squadron that performs air combat maneuvering training. Oceana's Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Units train highly qualified maintenance technicians for the squadrons. NAS Oceana is also the home of Fleet Logistics Support Squadron Five Six (VR-56).

Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic is the Navy's largest type wing flying more than 300 aircraft composed of six different variants of the FA-18 Hornet and Super Hornet. The wing, based at NAS Oceana, is also home to the east coast FA-18 Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) which trains pilots and Weapons System Operators (WSOs) in the Hornet and Super Hornet before they are assigned to operational fleet squadrons. The fleet squadrons deploy as part of Carrier Air Wings (CVWs) on aircraft carriers on both the east and west coasts. Five of the CVWs are under the command of CSFWL.

Learn More About NAS Oceana HERE!

The Military Aviation Museum, located at the Virginia Beach Airport is home to one of the largest private collections of World War 2 and Korean War era fighters, bombers, trainers and seaplanes. Many aircraft have been fully restored to their World War II condition and are available for flight demonstration, static display or movie production or commercials.

The Fighter Factory is the aircraft recovery and restoration component of the museum dedicated to the preservation of historical aircraft before they are lost forever. Some aircraft are in the process of restoration and many World War II planes have yet to be discovered!

I couldn’t get on last night and finally gave up. I’m able to get on now, but it does seem to be acting up

Given the FR issues I’m answer all your pings at one time:

HELLO!

Hope you all are having a good Tuesday even though FR is not having a good day (week??).

There seem to be some issues lately. I gave up for a while yesterday too and walked the dog. It sure was cold when I turned into the north wind.

Happy weird Tuesday, beachy...((HUGS))...having issues off and on with FR.

My day has gone to heck in a hand basket in the last half hour. Enjoy the rest of your Tuesday.

Yee-haw! We were at 23 degrees, too!
Without all the snow you had, and minus all the wrecks I saw on my nightly newscast. Hope your drive in to work was uneventful...

It is still below freezing at 30 degrees and sunny. Still most of the snow is still on the ground in the shady spots. Strange, huh!?

Still in the low 60's here with rain - guess the commute home will be an ordeal.

Aweeeee....thanks, HJ. We finally got edits, but because the “holiday” issue still has not been fixed, corrections are gonna take forever.
