Algore's invention makes it too easy.

I'd be impressed if someone knew without looking it up.

...surprising.

I don’t remember her name but she was the first woman ever elected to Congress and was from Montana. A Quaker I believe.

Montana.
Jeannette Rankin.
She was anti-war. She said if women couldn’t fight in a war then she wouldn’t vote for one. (Not sure that’s what she meant.) But she was in the anti-war party.

It was a woman Congressman from Montana(I think).

I believe she was a member of the “America First” isolationist movement, wasn’t she? (that group didn’t have much of a shelf life, post Pearl Harbor)

She (Rankin) was the founding Vice-President of the American Civil Liberties Union[8] and a founding member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom.

She said if women couldn’t fight in a war then she wouldn’t vote for one.

Feminism has hidden the meaning.

Back then, women were admired for their gentle natures and selfless giving as mothers and wives.

The thought of women fighting in a war was to think the impossible.

There are opportunists of all stripes:

Her brother Wellington Rankin was a power in the Montana Republican party, and managed her campaign for the party nomination for Congress in 1916 and in the general election.

Thanks for letting me learn something today. Rankin first elected to a term in 1916 and voted against WW1. A life long pacifist she finished up in 1919 and was re-elected in 1940 and sure enough voted against WW2. She believed FDR had advance knowledge of the attack. She went on to prot- est the Viet=Nam War.

The state (Montana) was all I remembered. I certainly didn't remember it was a woman.

My mother, now aged 90, has sworn for years that there were reports on radio at the time that FDR knew they were coming.

It wasn’t until much later that it was admitted that we were breaking the codes.
