Steyn: Newt ‘like Teddy Roosevelt mixed someone sort of novelty-crazed futurologist’ By Jeff Poor - The Daily Caller 9:19 AM 12/07/2011

In an appearance on “The Michael Berry Show” on KTRH in Houston on Tuesday, a disappointed Mark Steyn, the author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” declared the 2012 Republican nominating process a failure and chalked up the proliferation of cable debates as a substitute for campaigning in the early primary states as the reason.

“I think the nomination process failed last time around when John McCain wound up as the nominee and I think it is heading for failure this time around,” Steyn said. “I’m speaking to you from my home in New Hampshire … but in my state of New Hampshire, one reason we like the primaries is its all supposed to be about swinging by local diners and county fairs, and the annual pancake breakfast and all this kind of thing. And we know the clichés — the woman who tells the Washington Post, the New York Times every four years, you know, ‘I won’t vote for any candidate I haven’t danced with at least three times.’”

He nails it! The debate process has been a joke and is giving us a choice between Newt and Romney. The worst of the worst.

Sorry, most conservatives have read dumpbachmann.com and that’s where we get all our information about her.

And Herman, he’s a womanizer.

We like Newt cuz he’s smart.

And Romney cuz he’s next in line.

/sarc just in case you missed it...

Newt is the worst candidate, except for all the other ones.

Newt is the worst candidate, except for all the other ones.

National Post: "You were born in Toronto, but live in the U.S. Are you still a Canadian citizen?"

Mark Steyn: "I'm a citizen of Canada, never been anything else. I don't believe in dual citizenship."

So it seems like this Canuck fellow is telling we Americans how to vote. Has Mark Steyn become an American citizen since that interview with his home country's periodical?

We didn’t have all those debates in 2007 - so how come we got stuck with McCain?

We already had a statist masking as a conservative as president.

With Newt this will be the true death knell of conservatism as a viable political alternative in the US.

Once again liberal policies will fail, but while being labeled as right wing.

At this point I almost wish ... almost ... that Obama wins so that when the dust clears after the apocalypse all of the blame will be laid at the feet of the liberals.

I was saying it in 2009 and 2010. We need an elected conservative leader to do what Palin was doing. We needed someone like Jim DeMint to try and take thew wind of the conservative movement into his sails.

Romney has not been attacked by the Democrats, period. He is their preferred opponent.

Newton Leroy Gingrich is despised, publicly, by both Democratic Party and Republican Party establishment types. He is being trashed AS he attacks Obama, the administration, and Progressive stances and politics.

Who do you think the corrupt politicians fear more?

If you can’t bring yourself to say, “Newt Gingrich”, then you better hope Sarah Palin is drafted during a brokered, free-for-all nominating convention (which will be highly unlikely).

I am not that far behind. In that sense, I would rather lose with an outsider, states rights candidate like Perry than with big liberal Newt/Romney. At least, the philosophical contrast would be aired in the election cycle.

I’m glad debates have replaced all that retail politicing in IA and NH b/c I’m tired of those two niche states shoving themselves to the front every four years. Most who live in medium to large states will never even get a chance to see the candidates up close, much less demand they eat in some greasy spoon diner with them.

"..so how come we got stuck with McCain?"

He won more primaries.

Blame it on your fellow "citizens".

That's in quotes because they really aren't citizens, because that would require some effort.

They are merely voters, and they vote according to what the LMSM is telling them.

He's more of an observer who has interesting and entertaining opinions. I wouldn't fault him for expressing them. If he ends up working in the White House, like David Frum did, that would be a different matter.

There aren’t any decent candidates. It’s just as bad as the last time around. I’m not commenting too much on these candidate threads recently, because there’s hardly any point.

Any way you slice it, unless something new happens, we’re likely to end up with a lousy candidate, and probably Ron Paul or The Donald running on a third party ticket to deliberately ensure that the GOP loses.

"so how come we got stuck with McCain?"

Giuliani was supposed to run and split the moderate vote. For some silly reason he put all his eggs in the Florida basket.

The conservative field was hopelessly divided among several candidates, one of which (Fred) did the Sarah-Palin-Shuffle long enough to sap most of the energy away from the other conservatives preventing any of them from breaking out.

If it turned out that Thomson and Giuliani were paid by McCain to do what they did, I wouldn't be surprised.

“He nails it! The debate process has been a joke and is giving us a choice between Newt and Romney. The worst of the worst. “

It is by no means just “the debate process”. That, at least, has given us a little insight into the candidates, their personalities, and their capabilities. The main reason we’re where we are with the Republican candidates is the MSM, and the very effective smear campaigns launched at our best conservative candidates.

I mean, Cain “is a horrible womanizer”...never mind that Gingrich is at least as bad, but is somehow still in the race...and now the frontrunner?

I find it horribly ironic that in 2008 the Republicans nominated a squishy moderate, not-so-charismatic, too old WASP with temperament issues...and this time the Republicans are about to nominate a squishy moderate, not-so-charismatic, too old WASP with temperament issues - with really less to recommend him personally than McCain the war hero. Sadly this inanity/insanity comes at a time the country can least afford it, both figuratively and literally.

Sarah Palin so far outshines the current field it isn’t even funny. Too bad the attack dogs got to her. At this point I could learn to like Santorum.

Or how about RuPaul? At least we'd be able to say our president had balls!
