Duke lacrosse accuser can be tried on murder charges

Crystal Mangum, the former stripper who falsely accused members of the Duke University lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her in 2006, is competent to stand trial on murder charges in the death of her boyfriend, a Durham judge ruled Wednesday.

...

Mangum, an African American, accused three white lacrosse players at the prestigious private university of raping her at a house party.

But Mangum's story did not hold up under scrutiny, and by April 2007, Roy Cooper, the state attorney general, declared the young men innocent, saying they had been caught up in a "tragic rush to accuse" in a case that quickly took on racial overtones. Prosecutor Mike Nifong was eventually disbarred for his role in the case.

"Mangum was deemed competent to stand trial after a mental evaluation at a local hospital."

Her attorney must have raised a "mental competency" issue which had to be dealt with before a trial could be held. It appears that she has been evaluated and has been declared competent to stand trial.

I honestly think Duke University should be LIQUIDATED, its assets sold off and distributed to its many LaCrosse victims.

Did anyone know that during the trail IN COURT the relatives of this crazy nut were openly telling the relatives of the accused that they were going to KILL THEM?

Not in whispers, ok? And I mean during the trial, sort of like the people who casually talk during the whole movie.

They’d just tell them, “We’re going to come to your house and kill you...”

Virtually ALL of the relatives were told that in court, and there were no consequences for those people.

If you falsely accuse someone of rape, you should do time equal to the penalty of rape.

...and if someone threatens to kill you in open court, simply find them and kill them first.
It would be totally justifiable if that threat were overheard.

There was no trial in the Duke rape case. Do you mean in a court appearance for the accused rapists?

Doesn’t the LA Slimes know you never use the term “African-American” in the context of criminal behavior, like murder?

The only term allowable, in the rare instances it is mentioned at all, is “black”; all other racial decriptions are reserved for victim status or “celebrating diversity”.

I like the way you think.

Agree. Poor kids, often dealt a losing hand from the start. Some overcome it, most don’t.

And if you try to prosecute someone you know is innocent, you should have to do the time.

Personally, I'm tired of the "...but because you've done so much for the community..." defense. They should receive heftier punishment for breach of trust along with time for any other crimes they are convicted of.

My dad has an idea on how to deal with this, but I don't think I should mention it on a family forum!
