The New York Times reported last week that Republican leaders in the Senate are trying to recruit Gov. Dave Heineman to run against conservative Don Stenberg in the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Nebraska.
This recruitment effort is troubling for several reasons.
First, it threatens Don Stenberg, a proven conservative who is already leading incumbent U.S. Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) in the polls. Gov. Heineman is a good guy, but by his own admission his heart is not in this race, and he's definitely no Don Stenberg. In fact, the Cato Institute recently gave Heineman a "C" grade in its 2010 scorecard because he supported too much spending.
Second, it ignores the wishes of the grassroots in Nebraska and all across the nation, which have lined up solidly behind Don Stenberg. Freedom-loving Americans know Stenberg is the one candidate in this race who will stand up to the big spenders in both parties.

The RNC is less afraid of Stenberg than of NE Attny Gen Brunning. He has the lead in the early polls, has the bankroll. And was the 1st to file a court action against ObamaCare.
Yup. Let’s ruin ‘em all.
Then the “messiah” will coast to re-election.
Heineman may not be God's gift to conservatism, but he's been a very successful governor and would have been a good presidential nominee, better than any of the schmucks in that race.
How sad that conservatives have to raise money due to the threat from..republicans.

That is so true. I do not give a dime to the RNC. Nationally there man is Romney. Any Tea Party candidate will not get any support from the RNC. If fact the RNC will do all it can to prevent them from getting elected.
We are at war on two fronts, and one of them is our own. Mutiny, anyone? Safe in their seats, these RINO are smug and arrogant and have money as their power. Newt has lit the match that has exposed who they are, all because of a commanding lead over their pigeon, Romney. Wonderful! Nice to see them sweat bullets for a change!
Maybe Newt will come in and try to put Dede Scozzafava on the ballot.
They did the same thing in Deleware and Nevada.
Wish I could vote for Newt, but I’m not a registered Republican anymore. After they stabbed Sharon Angle in the back and supported Reid, I called them up and told them where they can stick their heads.

2012 Republican Race: The Field May Not Be Closed
Conventional wisdom is that the Republican presidential field is set, and that it is much too late for a new candidate to enter the race.
In years past, that would be absolutely correct. Over the last few decades, dozens of primaries and caucuses have been shoe-horned into the opening weeks of the election year, with the tendency on the Republican side for the front-running candidate to score a quick knockout.
But next year, the arrangement of the primary calendar is much different. It is less condensed at the front, much more loaded with events at the back, with the prospect of a viable, late-starting candidate quite real.
