Anchor Baby: A Term Redefined as a Slur
The New York Times ^ | December 8, 2011 | By JULIA PRESTON

What does the term “anchor baby” mean? If you were to look it up in the American Heritage Dictionary, you would find a new definition since last week.

The term was among some 10,000 new words and phrases in the fifth edition of the dictionary, published in November. It was defined as: “A child born to a noncitizen mother in a country that grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil, especially such a child born to parents seeking to secure eventual citizenship for themselves and often other members of their family.”

But when Steve Kleinedler, the executive editor of the dictionary, read that definition during a radio interview last month, it troubled Mary Giovagnoli, the director of the Immigration Policy Center, a pro-immigration research group in Washington.

The once-obscure term has been used frequently in the recent debate over whether to change the Constitution to deny automatic American citizenship to children born in this country to illegal immigrant parents

Just like in "1984", they are trying to remove words from the English language so you can no longer express what you want, and eventually not even think it.

Does not require a constitutional anything to address the false concept of anchor baby, it just takes the congress passing a law saying blacks law is the proper definition of citizen ship. That is what we followed for most of our history. And what the majority of other countries follow to day.

You are probably right. “and subject to the laws thereof” is the phrase in the 14th Amendment.

The law would offer the definition that children without at least one US citizen parent would not be subject to US law when their parents returned to their home of citizenship, and so such a child born in the US would not be eligible for birthright citizenship.

The law could, (note I do not say ‘should’) even make the same definition for children without two US citizen parents.

Currently in Title 18 of the US code there is a provision that children whose parentage is unknown and who is raised in the US from prior to the age of 5 years is be awarded US citizenship.

Cool, if this term is a,’slur’,, then whats the NEXT term to denote the same behavior for a few years until that one is frowned upon too? Though we change words every few years, we are trying to describe the same exact concept. Wetbacks became illegal aliens, illegals became undocumented,, (just missing those papers they never had) and now,, they are immigrants.
A fun vocabulary increasing game!

I am surprised that it took this long to show up in dictionaries. That is an old fashioned view of the “anchor baby” and one which involved a lot of patience to see to fruition. It’s also passe, and the new thing is the dragged-in illegale kid that you “can’t kick back out of the USA because he’d never survive in Mexico or Central America.” And of course the illegale parents have to stay for him or her. Instant anchor, and not even the dictionary has caught up.

Marxists: Control the meaning of words and you control the minds and ideas.

It is how abortion got accepted....using “pro choice”. (This adoption of Pro-life is a winning strategy to reverse the acceptance of evil).

It is how vile homosexual acts are being slipped into normalcy—”gay” it is a “civil right” ha ha although it is a behavior. An evil, dysfunctional one. That is the same logic as claiming pederasty is an innate sexual orientation so it is a civil right.

The Marxists have been shaping ideas and perceptions in the US for a century— They taught Goebbels. Nazis adopted Euthanasia from America too.

The Marxists took down the patriot, Tailgunner Joe, with their lies and innuendos when he was just pointing out the truth (Blacklisted by History).

It is there MO—silence EVERYONE who posits the truth-—the Homosexual Mafia is the biggest fascists in America today. So far they even have Rush Limbaugh silent on their fascist Marxist moves to destroy the minds of kids in Kindergarten with their perversion and corrupt their sexual identity. They allow a sexual pervert to be the education czar.

Every psychologists who is not a Marxist, knows the damage that Sex Ed does in the latency period. Freud even knew. But zero is out to destroy your kid’s mind and corrupt them so they are OWS and ACORN non thinking, IMMORAL idiots.

"It was defined as: 'A child born to a noncitizen mother...'"

This definition is incorrect. It should be "A child born to noncitizen parents...'"

If the father is a US citizen, the baby is not an anchor baby.

HEY YOU! YEAH JULIA PRESTON, YOU! What are you doing? Your article is a puff-piece to help illegal aliens continue to drain the lifeblood of our Nation!

As you stated in your column: “ - - - Mary Giovagnoli, the director of the Immigration Policy Center, a pro-immigration research group in Washington. - - - “ is a card-carrying criminal enabler of illegal aliens.

Why should any US citizen give a flying New York Times about ANY “definition” that she or others like her comes up with?

Free Hospital Emergency Room treatment, and Free Citizenship for Anchor Babies ARE the two major US Federal Government caused problems that help criminal, and illegal aliens ruin America.

Good catch, but what if there is no real relationship between the citizen father and the alien mother? What if she just goes around having one night stands until fertilization occurs?

FYI!

Illegal aliens are now referred to as "cross-border violators"

12-7-11 During mandatory Cultural and Environmental Awareness training that all Border Patrol agents must take, we learn that illegal aliens are now referred to as "cross-border violators". We further learn that we should carry lots of garbage bags and assist the "cross-border violators" in hauling out their trash and disposing of it properly. Further evidence that Border Patrol field operations have been hijacked by politically correct politicians. We are glad to know that the huge army of Border Patrol staff officer bureaucrats in D.C. are busy finding new ways to try to lobotomize rank-and-file agents so they can be transformed into politically correct robots who are afraid to make a decision or aggressively enforce the laws of this country. After all, too many arrests of "cross-border violators" would not look good for another massive amnesty program.

agree totally

I never thoguht of it as a slur until this article. The baby had no choice as to the circumstances of its birth.

I can understand animus towards the parnets, but not the child.

Fails to state that illegals use these anchor babies as nothing more than commodities to loot the US gravy train......

1. SS nos issued to newborns are used by illegal parents to establish multiple fake identities.......even to vote illegally.

2. EITC payments to illegals has skyrocketed to some $20 billion......faking kids names is the MO.....and ups the payout.

In my part of NJ many of the anchor babies have 2 illegal parents; the women don’t mix much with the gringos because of the language barrier (among other things).

Most of the animus is a figment of a liberal mind too. Supposedly ‘illegal alien’ is a hateful phrase too when in fact it is simply a legal term.

When registering the birth of a child to a non-citizen mother, it would be necessary only to establish that the biological father is, indeed, a U.S. citizen.

The law does not require a "real" relationship to exist. It does not concern itself with the personal feelings of the persons involved, nor with the specific circumstances of conception - other than that one of the gametes must come from a U.S. citizen.

Now, the issue of phony marriages to obtain Green Cards - that is an entirely different matter.

All persons born ... in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States

The best way to look at this is to consider who is excluded. Those born in the US who are NOT subject to its jurisdiction are a fairly precisely defined group. This group, according to common law, includes primarily foreign diplomats, essentially those with official diplomatic immunity, and armed foreign invaders.

Members of these groups are not subject to the laws of the US and thus children born to them on US soil are not citizens.

Everybody else, who are subject to US jurisdiction while on US soil, is eligible.

I seriously doubt the Congress and the States intended the legalization of anchor babies when they passed the amendment, but that is what it says.

Any other interpretation, IMO, requires ignoring the plain meaning of the words, similar to the way gun control people try to ignore the plain meaning of the 2nd Amendment.

Dictionaries and the rabid liberal left can try to redefine words, actually thoughts, but they only succeed in adding more bullshit words to the liberal lexicon. Right-thinking AMERICANS know what anchor babies are, and they should not be granted citizenship unless at least one of their parents are not already American Citizens, period.

I figure that the children of illegal aliens, if shipped out of the US with their parents, would not be subject to US laws.

The various Indian tribes, on their reservations, would also not be subject to the Jurisdiction of the US, though they could be if they moved off the reservation.

Welfare Baby or Anchor Baby....“Used as a disparaging term for a child born to a noncitizen mother in a country that grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil, especially when the child’s birthplace is thought to have been chosen in order to improve the mother’s or other relatives’ chances of securing eventual citizenship.”

Political Correctness on steriods.
