Obama: Not redistributing wealth
(CBS News)
In a "60 Minutes" interview with Steve Kroft, President Obama disputes the notion he is trying to redistribute wealth with his plans to treat the country's economic ills. He tells Kroft he's just attempting to deliver the "American Deal" of a strong middle class "where everybody is able to do their part and everybody's able to succeed." Kroft spoke to the president yesterday at the White House and Tuesday in Osawatomie, Kan., for a "60 Minutes" interview to be broadcast Sunday, Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET/PT.
In the interview, Kroft points out that in his speech in Kansas, he mentioned income inequality, a phrase that suggests a need to redistribute wealth. The president quickly responded:
President Obama: Look, everybody's concerned about inequality. Those folks in there, who were listening to the speech, those are teachers and small-business people, and probably some small-town bankers, who are in there thinking to themselves, "How is it that I-- we're -- working so hard, we now have Mom and Dad working hard, maybe if they're lucky, they might have two jobs to try to pay off their house note, and it just seems like they're treading water? And meanwhile, they know that corporate profits are at a record level, that a lot of folks are doing very well. What's happened to the bargain? What's happened to the American deal that says, you know, we are focused on building a strong middle class?

Well, I suppose there’s some truth in it. He’s not redistributing wealth in a leftie idealist kind of way. He’s redistributing it to his friends and supporters, sometimes in multi-billion dollar bundles.

I don’t mind the quibble at all.
For all I know Mill might have written the phrase at some point but I can’t track that down.
Wikipedia, for what it’s worth (often not much) says Marx “popularized” the phrase but attributes it to yet a couple other ivory tower commies:

No doubt Obama, who seems to read nothing, know no history, and give no thought to empirical fact, proudly thinks that he himself originated the whole bloody concept.
It would be interesting to see the total amount of income earned by the bottom 47% who pay no income taxes.
He really isn’t redistributing wealth, he is DESTROYING THE WEALTH OF THE USA.
Marx and Obama had some things in common — a triumphant ignorance of history, a shameless penchant to nevertheless give history lessons, and, my personal favorite, never having held a job, relying on rich benefactors instead of working.
As South Carolina congressman Joe Wilson shouted to Obama during the State of the Union Address a few years ago,
“YOU LIE!”
60 Minutes acts as the ultimate defense attorney for the Dems and prosecutor for the Republicans. Dems get to explain themselves, especially any of their missteps, with no challenge to their feel-good, evasive, even lying, answers. Republicans have to answer “some say something awful” questions and are rebutted again and again for their answers. I despise the leftist media.
Where is the Joe the Plumber tape?
Redistributing to me an’ my homeys.
And MY employer.
WTF not one question about Obama’s over 5 trillion dollar increase to the NATIONAL DEBT in his short 3 years. Obama has destroyed the economy because he has racked the debt to unsustainable limits and now he will be telling everyone oh we have to get the money to pay for it all from the wealthy but I am not redistributing the wealth no, not here, how does the media let him get away with this?
“I think when you spread the wealth around, its good for everybody.” Barack Obama to Joe the Plumber, October 12, 2008
True!
He’s simply destroying America and the only beneficiary is the Socialist’s control over government, business, and the individual.
Hey Barry, instead of worrying about slicing up the pie, how about we NOT put the bakeries out of business.
When government makes it impossible to make a profit, some people just stop trying
Yes, the owner went Galt. No hard feelings.
No, no - it’s true.
He’s redistributing the money to his friends and allies.
What you thought he was going to redistribute it to nobodies who can’t do anything for him?
So it’s not really “redistribution” - it’s more like...well, I would say “theft” but that is illegal and what Obama’s doing is just fine. :)
You can’t redistribute that which is disappearing or never coming into being.
You know, part of the problem is that the Federal Reserve has kept the interest rates so low that anyone with some money in savings are not doing well at all, especially if they are depending on at least part of their savings income to live - like those in retirement. Banks, etc are doing so well partly based on low interest rates on funds and if banks can’t make money now they will never make money. They are lending at 5.00% to 8.00% using funds paying .25% - such a deal, except for those that are supplyng the funds practically free.
The Federal Reserve should step up rates.
It used to be that most people, from the lowliest stable hand to the highest of royalty, could have the same ambition: to through their own efforts make their childrens' lives better than their own. Those who suggest that every child should have an equal chance at success would deny people the primary ambition which has held society together for millennia.
